It looked to me like he got beat with skill and tried to adjust last second to stop the shot. A bad hit but didn’t look intentionally vicious. I could be wrong.
If sports, any of them, actually cared to stop injuries, they could simply suspend a player for as long as the injured opponent is out. If they have to leave the game, you're removed for the game, if they're out for the season, you're gone for the season. Obviously there would have to be some way of judging intent/recklessness/etc, but the precedent would change games quickly.
There is little respect in hockey. Used to be that your whole team would stand up for you and take out a repeat offender like Gudas. Its honestly shocking nobody went after him… pretty much sums up the Leafs. NHL officiating doesn't help… it only encourages this sort of behavior. Players should be given lost games in proportion to the time lost by the player who was intentionally injured. Someone needs to take out Gudas… permanently.
The CBA says five games maximum when there is a phone discussion. Parros was a goon. I think he made the call to not discuss it in person because he respects the criminal activities of guys like Gudas, Wilson, and Matt Cooke.
If a player intentionally does something that results in an injury, that play should be suspended without pay until the injured player returns. If that player's career is over, same for the offender. That shit will then stop.

Another comparable with a way less greasy player than Matt Cooke is Jason Spezza in 2021 getting suspended for 6 games. Make it make sense..

Seems like ending a players season should be more than a 5 game suspension especially when its the result of something that got you tossed.

Make a rule that if you deliberately injure a player, you pay their salary for as long as they're out of play.
