The Calder Trophy race is heating up — and two Montreal Canadiens rookies are right in the middle of it.

On today’s show, Shaun Starr and Marco D’Amico break down the cases for Ivan Demidov and Jakub Dobes as legitimate contenders for Rookie of the Year.

Can BOTH Demidov and Dobes finish in the top 3 of Calder voting?
Who has the stronger case to finish second?
And most importantly — who has been more valuable to the Canadiens this season?

We dive into:

Demidov’s offensive impact and upside
Dobes’ importance in net and game-stealing ability
How voters typically view forwards vs goalies
What could swing the final results down the stretch

This Calder race is far from settled — and the Habs may have TWO players in the conversation.

  1. Dobes is amongst the best goalies of the league in advanced stats (moneypuck). He's #8 in the league with 18.3 goals saved above expected… but even more impressive, in his last 10 games, he's #1 in the league with 20.6 goals saved above expected, Hofer (St-Louis Blues) is #2 with 11.4…. The gap is out of this world. Dobes is saving 2 goals per game lately.

  2. Masking the defensive shortcomings…exactly right.the streak was great but the hab’s game was far from perfect for a lot of it

  3. I dont think Wolf's wins are equal to Dobes.

Nobody saw calcary as a good team and Wolf was the reason they were in a playoff spot. Far from the case with Dobes

  4. Marco, just wondering why you pronounce various players like Demidov, and Kapanen so differently than almost every NHL analyst, or journalist?

  5. a) Dobes is almost 25, you have to weigh that in.
    b) Demidov averaged 15:23 with Kapanen and Newhook as linemates almost all year while Sennecke played an avg of 17.27 with Gauthier and McTavish. 2 minutes a game of a season is 164 more minutes, that almost 11 more games of ice time, with much better linemates. How many points would Demidov have right now if he played with a 40 goal scorer on his line and a center that can play something else than dump and chase…

  6. Damn it is crazy how the narrative changed in regards to Dobes. 20 games ago he (Dobes) was considered a dud by most of the media sphere making joke on his mental fortitude, style, etc. and now they can't chant enough how good he is. it seems it's only now that people can't stop saying he is a rookie….. I'm happy for Dobes and he was 100% accurate to say i only listen to my goalie coach and my parents…
Wish him all the best and a long career with MTL

  7. I get why Schaefer wins the Calder this year, but it has to be said…
Schaefer plays 10+ min on average more than Demidov.
Demidov is playing with another rookie and elevated Kapanen to a top 5.
Demidov has helped Newhooks numbers this year as well.
That line has had a carousel of players on the line all season difficult to get good chemistry going.
Demidov is going to be a STUD for this team. Hope Hughes can lock him up at a decent contract and we see him in Montreal for many years to come…

  8. Habs better stop being so sloppy or they'll be bounced in four games. Playoffs are a whole different beast

  9. Too bad we cant get Wild card spot 2, it seems to be the easier road. So it seems our first round meet up will be between Boston, Tampa or Buffalo. Yikes

  10. I would love to see Demi and Dobes finish 2 and 3 but with writers picking the winner I think we're farting against thunder as my pops would say.

  11. I totally agree with Marco’s assessment of the Calder voting. I think Suzuki, Hutson and Dobes should get some Hart trophy votes.

  12. I certainly agree that the trophy is Schaefer’s to lose at this point, but how much bearing would making or missing the playoffs have? It looks like Islanders are likely to slip out, while Montreal is comfortably battling for the division and/or conference lead.

Regardless, Demidov would need to finish hot (and Schaefer cold) to open a gap for this to even be a consideration, and the question would be how large that gap would need to be. Ivan has a 2 point lead right now (which is nothing for Fwd vs Def); would a 10 point gap if he were to get hot (i.e. 8 points in 5 games, on top of whatever Schaefer registers) make a difference? Unlikely of course, but just thinking out loud if this is even a possibility.

Ironically, Dobes probably has a better chance of winning over Demidov at this point since it is harder to compare a goalie with a skater, and if he picks up another ~3 wins (and maybe a shutout?), it could be close… No matter what, such an exciting team and future ahead! 😃

  13. Kapanen, Demidov and Hage as the Canadiens' second line for the next 10 years? Although personally I would like Hughes to overpay for Knies to complete the Kapanen – Demidov line.
Still need a shutdown defenceman – Reinbacher maybe???

  14. I think the time has come for goalies and players to have their own separate ROTY winners.
Like a pitcher in baseball, it cannot be overstated how much a good, or hot goalie can change the game and win a game or series. (Just ask BLUE JAYS fans how they feel about Yoshinobu Yamamoto.)
I always appreciate D'Amico's insight. He's by far the most logical and unbiased HABS analyst in the game.

  15. Could you please address the differences and failures to adapt between Doby and Fowler. I do Not want to criticize. Doby is good with the puck and his controlled aggression (Hellebyck) are good; but rebounds mean that the D plays accordingly. JF plays a different game and our D need to adapt.

  16. 1. Schaefer
    2. Dobes
    3. Demidov
    4. Senneke
    5. Kapenen
This is arguably better than last year when Hutson won the Calder, 3 of the top 5.

  17. I finally have to admit that Schaefer has a lock on RoY, I was a bit hopefuly Demigod would break out more after the Olympic break. Which is not to say he hasn't been great. That line is doing good but you can see they need some size and more skill up the middle. Imagine having another Slafs to spot in there, especially at center. But what a future when we have with Demigod, Dobes, Fowler, and Kapanen as ROOKIES. GO HABS GO!

  18. It doesn't really get mentioned that Demidov also played the entire season with ANOTHER ROOKIE on his line, who has also had a great season.

  19. I agree with you Marco I know some give you a hard time but kapanen is a elite 3 c on cup contender

  20. Schaefer
    Demidov (most rookie points)
    Dobes (most rookie wins)
    Kapanen. (most rookie goals)

    The future is bright

  21. Demidov 20-30 more points, had he been playing with a bonafide playmaking centre? Would the Calder considerations be the same if Demidov had 80-90 points? Lack of proper centre may have cost him the Calder?
