SHAKEN: Can Timothy Liljegren and David Kampf REPLACE John Carlson, Nic Dowd for the Capitals?

Nic Dowd’s exit leaves a significant void in the Washington Capitals’ fourth line, raising questions about defensive structure and special teams reliability. Swapped for future assets at the trade deadline, Dowd’s absence paves the way for David Kampf’s arrival—tasked with anchoring tough defensive assignments, penalty kills, and key face-offs as the Capitals attempt to stay competitive.

DAN HOLMI analyzes how Dowd’s departure could accelerate opportunities for emerging forwards like Justin Sourdif and Ryan Leonard, while testing the team’s depth and adaptability. Can Kampf effectively step into Dowd’s crucial shutdown role, or will the Capitals’ shifting lineup result in growing pains as they balance playoff hopes with a pivot toward youth and the future?

  1. I will continue cheering hardcore for caps when ovie retires one day. Dubois. Hope he takes the next step and gets up to somewhere between where he is and Mcdavid stats. That’ll be around 100;points per season the next five years. Ovie can’t leave just yet. Even one season will help settling things down and getting to 950 goals and other milestones. He’s far too good to just leave. Anyway. Chycryn never passes to ovie. Always wants to short himself. I t.hint next year already the caps win cup.

  2. I don't think this team is trying to stay competitive right now. They know they're going nowhere and Ovie is done at seasons end. The mistake they made was not moving more 30+ year old players at the deadline.

  3. Don't get it crossed, it's cool the moves that happened are the moves that happened, but this season has been neither a full commitment to a rebuild nor has it been one last big hurrah for Ovi's potential last ride.

It's just a mushy middle season overall because we're in no way a lottery candidate and we're (prooooobably) not making the playoffs. We could and should have dumped Duhaime to get a look at Trineyev. Earlier you mentioned the potential to move on from PLD, maybe he could've went to a team looking to stay in the mix that we could have gotten another first rounder and a center in return.

We also haven't brought guys like Andrew Cristall or Ilya Protas in for a look yet. I know the expectation is that Hutson joins the team this year but I think it's time for the full youth movement to begin. If we're not going to make the dance, it's time to go looking for new dates. Let's give Trineyev, Protas and Cristall an early look.
