Connor Hellebuyck delivers on the biggest stage.
The Winnipeg Jets’ star goaltender leads Team USA to a gold medal victory over Canada in an instant classic. In a rivalry that never disappoints, Hellebuyck stood tall when it mattered most — making clutch saves, shutting down Canada’s top scorers, and proving once again why he’s one of the best goalies in the world.
From huge momentum stops to late-game pressure moments, this was a championship performance. USA vs Canada. Gold on the line. And Hellebuyck answered the call.

Canada was not the better team so please get over the fact that we are now as good as CANADA if not better Goaltending was better D was better and O was closer to Canada than anyone wants to admit
Gained a new kinda respect for helle after this. I’m a Stl blues fan so I’m the same way you are. Love Binner but happy to see the u.s win
Maybe Canada will want to become the 51ST STATE now because then they can be winners…………USA ……..USA……..Hasta Luego
As an American Jets fan I see this as an absolute win. GGs Canada yall played amazing and Helly stood on his head to save us.
Hellebuyck did make a save like that in the playoffs against the Blues lol
The new secretary of defense!!!
I've said it before and I will say it again 3-3 what a crappy way to end a beautiful game
Well done, Connor Hellebuyck!!
Unfortunately Helly will never win a cup.
thanks for not hating. much love to you and all
Our USA team fought hard to win against Canada cause you all booed our National Anthem when we played hockey against you in Canada. Yes USA we beat Canada. We are proud to be Americans.
🇺🇸DAVID(USA) FINALLY SLAYED 🇨🇦GOLIATH (CANADA)🤗🏅👍🏒🤪
Nobody needs to worry about Colorado in the playoffs. McKinnon shoots 8 feet over the net and rims it out every time. Misses empty nets. Selfish plays. Brutal player under pressure.
As a canadian ill give a realistic fact. Canadas attack time was 47 minutes to 13 and its about time that a country with nearly 400 million people caught to a country with 40 million who had dominated the sport for nearly a 100 years
If canada was not on the USA border they would of been taken over by now!!! HEH!!!
Agreed
It sucls but Helly being out of this world. He reached his best hame ever. And Gudreau jersey , kids.
One to remember
AMERICANS ALSO HIT A POST AND TWO CROSS BARS.. JUST GET OVER IT, CANADA LOST.. SIMPLE.. THEY LOST MENS AND WOMANS. LOST BOTH
Jets fans know this more than anyone. It's the first elimination game Hellebuyck has ever stolen. I'm not sure he's ever even been the best Jet in a playoff game
Pretty classy with the Gaudreau tribute
why would any canadian congratulate connor hellebuyck? what a traitor!
American teams never give respect to Kyle Connor. The guy is an absolute dog on the puck and a scoring machine and he doesn't even get playing time.
The statistics from these international games are frighteningly uninformative. But when you dig into them, I think it is pretty clear that – actually – each of these national teams were engaged in a battle of pathological stupidity to see who could more effectively maximize the other’s chance of victory. The math is frighteningly clear that the roster construction for Team USA seems to have done nothing but dramatically decrease their pathways to victory & apply extreme pressure on near perfection in goal & PK while simultaneously maximizing the shot volume they would face. This was further exacerbated by Sullivan’s incredible decision to react to pressure in the 2nd period by putting the USA’s most dominate line (Hughes-Larkin-Thompson) on ice for almost the entire rest of the game — even though that line had been driving USA opportunities & possession in the 1st period (as they had against Sweden & Slovakia). Also: What’s the point of loading up your roster on center man with absurd faceoff skill if you don’t trust the best of them all to get you possession in the defensive zone and drive the breakout to flip the pressure?
Thankfully, Team Canada seems to have deployed pathological stupidity in each of the elimination games. I didn’t watch any of them other than the last minute of Finland, but even the scary simple stats kept from international hockey games makes it clear they did exactly what they did against the USA.
Namely, they forgot how to play Canadian hockey.
So, they show up with red and black uniforms that look remarkably Soviet. And that’s the style of hockey they played, albeit without the wider rinks that made the Soviet’s style tougher for North American teams to counter.
What you see in the data is an almost exclusive focus on a style of attack driven from the rush and lateral movement. There was some real obsession with the royal road going on and some real arrogance that elite level skill was going to overpower the goalies in each of these elimination games — even though each of those goalies are very strong against the rush and lateral attacks.
And deploying that same strategy against the USA was absolutely criminally insane. Because their entire defense is elite at defending against lateral attacks. There’s almost no rebound in that game. And while there are a few instances of near misses by Canada, the same applies to the USA (eg Matthew’s inexplicable failure to take a point black shot at an open net & the shot that hit the right post, rolled around the crossbar, hit the left post and bounced out).
In light of Team USA’s criminally stupid roster construction and strategy (to reduce events – thinking that reducing variability without understanding how mathematically it increases the role of puck luck) — it’s remarkable they managed to win.
But they won because Canada attacked in the one way that was going to look like dominance optically — but never presented a hint of danger. Lateral attacks and shots from the slot are not dangerous against Hellebuyck & the USA defensive strategy.
But all Canada had to do was stop being so cocky on their elite skill being able to overpower everyone. And just play north American hockey. And create chaos around the crease. They hardly even tried. Even though the Avalanche & Blues created the roadmap for everyone to see how to make the immortal USA goalie mortal. And even though the USA skaters were defensively weaker at this kind of messy positional battle.
Honestly. I am astounded by the stupidity of the tactics both teams employed.
