Buffalo Sabres THIRD PAIR BATTLE commences between Stanley, Kesselring, Schenn, Metsa, and Timmins

The Buffalo Sabres have five defensemen that are all competing for two spots on the bottom pairing down the stretch and into the playoffs. Logan Stanley and Luke Schenn are the new guys, but does that mean they’ll automatically get the benefit of the doubt? Stanley has looked better than Schenn, who Sneaky Joe does not believe will factor into playoff lineups.

Zach Metsa still has an incredible run of 5-on-5 success going, but his lack of special teams usage makes him a tough candidate to get playing time. And with Conor Timmins returning to the picture, could he carve out a spot due to his penalty killing? Michael Kesselring appears to be the guy that best fits the Sabres system, but health has continued to be a concern.

Plus, a look at some of the Lightning stats since the Olympic break shows they’re not getting unlucky in their losses, they’re just getting outplayed.

  1. Timmins/Kess/Metsa are your 5, 6, & 7th dmen. Crazy to think what we gave up for an 8th & 9th dman. But I am glad Mrtka is still part of the org.

  2. Stanley hasn’t been good because of Schenn. He was good in his first game, then Lindy put him with Schenn and he’s struggled. I’d like to see Stanley and Timmins or Stanley and Metsa.

  3. I would hope Timmins would play a lot given how much we are paying him vs. the others…I don’t understand the purpose of Schenn, outside of ‘locker room guy’, but we already had a locker room guy in Bryson, so we purely traded a mid guy with no playoff experience for a mid-to-bad guy with some playoff experience a decade ago.

  4. I believe that it’s Metza’s reach that keeps him off the PK. We all know he’s a good skater and positionally responsible, but in the Penalty Kill, you need to cover a large area. Not just with quickness, but you need to be able to extend your stick WAY into passing lanes.

That’s not even mentioning having to have the strength and size to move players parked in front of the net.

  5. Scheen should never see the ice unless it’s an absolute emergency. The third paring should be Stanley kess/metsa. Try out Timmons there a few times before the playoffs.
