The San Diego Gulls earned a hard-fought point but fell 4-3 in a shootout to the San Jose Barracuda Wednesday night at Pechanga Arena San Diego.
San Diego jumped out to a strong start, opening the scoring just 1:59 into the first period on Roland McKeown’s fifth goal of the season, assisted by Ryan Carpenter and Nikita Nesterenko. Justin Bailey doubled the lead at 15:14, finishing a feed from Sasha Pastujov to give the Gulls a 2-0 advantage after 20 minutes. San Jose responded in the second, getting goals from Jimmy Huntington and Oliver Wahlstrom, the latter on the power play, to even the score at 2-2.
Luca Cagnoni gave the Barracuda their first lead midway through the third period, but the Gulls refused to back down. With the net empty in the final minute, Carpenter buried the equalizer with just 4.5 seconds remaining in regulation, finishing off a play from Matthew Phillips and Sam Colangelo to force overtime. San Diego outshot San Jose 39-30 on the night and 6-3 in overtime but could not convert on five power-play opportunities.
In the shootout, Colangelo scored in the opening round, but goals from Igor Chernyshov and Kasper Halttunen secured the win for San Jose. Carpenter and McKeown were named among the game’s three stars as the Gulls moved to 2-0-1-2 against the Barracuda this season.
