If it's not Matthews, it's probably McAvoy or Eichel. I think an argument could be made for Slavin but doubt he's considered to be a big enough of a "star"

He is the guy who scored 69 in the regular season with 5 hatricks against non playoff teams. The same guy who scored 1 freakin goal in the playoffs that same year.

As a NON-Leafs fan who watches infinite hockey, the issue is simply personality. Matthews doesn't inspire people, much less alpha warrior men who are 100X more competitive than anything you've ever met. He's sulky and pouty and monotone and seemingly interested in irrelevant stuff like handbags / fashion. You don't run through walls for a man like Auston Matthews.
I am not sure that having a letter on your jersey means much anyways. but, you are probably right, it is because he is a Leaf.

only times matthews deserved scrutiny was losing against the habs and blue jackets years ago. he is a great player and a good captain

The hate towards Mathews is because of the scummy Toronto media and fan base. They constantly run superstars out of town. And then they proceed to thrive in other cities. Once Mathews gets tired of it and leaves it'll just fall on the next guy.
