Looking Forward and Back to Put Kaprizov’s Extension in Perspective

The cap is skyrocketing, so don’t be surprised when cap hits get close to 20 million for superstars in the coming years.

  1. This has potential to be one of the worst contracts in the NHL history. Good luck wild

  2. Kaprizov is 29 at the time of the contract.. And wild is nowhere near cup ready. So basically when they could be in a few years at least. Kaprizov is 33+ and likely not as good as now, especially considering his injury history. Just boggles that they threw so much term with that money.

  3. Let’s say 17 mil gets you 100 points and 10 mil gets you 80 points. That 7 mil can be spread through building a 3rd line of players for an extra 2mil+ per year which is going to help you win a cup. I just don’t see Wild doing anything with this contract now

  4. If the Wild actually want to contend they are going to have strike gold with a bunch of their recent draft picks and cheap reclamation projects a la Nuke and Lehky in Colorado and Bennett and Forsling in Florida. No other way you get the depth with that kind of overpay

  5. One thing that is constant, many superstars claim the increases in salary cap for themselves, and they still don't win cups.

  6. We need a rise in the bottom The stars will get paid but the bottom feeders need their 1 million dollar salary

  7. Kaprizov contract in my opinion is high for a winger. the Centre position should be the highest paid, followed closely by an elite Dman and elite winger

  8. Thank you for breaking this down. People casually complaining that this is another Parise/Suter situation don’t know what they’re talking about.

  9. The hate on this contract is crazy to me. 18 is the new 14, and it was always going to be that way with the cap moving. The guy has top of the league production, so he should be top of the league pay.

  10. So if Kiril gets 16 million or 18 million for half a year of injury filled hockey, cant get out of the first round, often doesnt make the playoffs, McDavid should be making 36 million for playing a full season at least. Also has the ability to get past LAK in the first round every year automatic. I expect this contract to look horrible as he is watching from the tv screens at home with his next injury followed by the next injury after that.

  11. Zuccy is out 7-8 weeks…the injuries have already started and the season hasn't even begun. I love the Wild, but the Minnesota sports curse is real. I think this is a decent contract for his talent, but like everyone knows, he's injury prone. I sure hope we aren't paying $17 million for 42 games a season.

  12. Fixed-Record setting KAP hit! But worth the money he is a superstar that is loved in minny and we could not afford to lose him. He is in his prime next 4-5 years and we will get the very best out of him. He is a top 10 player in the league #10 on paper and could move up a couple. 3-4 years down the road the money will be forgotten. Congrats to him and minny

  13. Thank you for your analysis! I really appreciate you digging into the numbers. Super helpful. And as a wild fan… Super encouraging!!

  14. Camoon now. What else could minnesota do? Player like this is one in a million. You dont get these kinda gems in minnesota basically ever. You give him what ever he wants to stay in there, if he went anywere he woulve get the same. Teams wouldve just made room for player like this somehow if hes available

  15. It will be really interesting to see what this does not only to other superstar level contracts coming up (McDavid, Eichel etc.), but also the players one tier below that. For example, I imagine Martin Necas' asking price just went up a bit and is only going up further, especially if he gets another season over point per game, which is quite likely playing with MacKinnon and Makar. I could very well see Necas demanding 10-11 million and considering the Avs didn't want to pay Rantanen (at the moment clearly the better player of the two) the 12-12,5 million he wanted, some interesting times and choices could be ahead for the Avs. Again.

  16. As a Stars fan I am so stressed…. Between Robo and Harley I don't think there's anyway we can keep both players 😓

  17. It's insane to think the salary cap started at $39 million. How did the Red Wings and Rangers drop like $30 million from their rosters?

  18. Ovi made 9.5M all this career except his entry contract. in 08-09, his salary was 9.5M and the cap was 56.7M . Ovi salary was 16.7548% of the cap that season and that season only since the cap has always been raised. his cap hit now is 9.9%

  19. It’s not just star players that will see the fruits of a higher cap.

Luke Hughes just got paid $9 mil, other players will get increases too.

Just cause the cap is going up doesn’t mean other salaries don’t adjust as well.

Kirill was worth $14.5-$15.5 and the Wild overpaid.

If they win a cup, it doesn’t matter, but if they don’t, it’s going to look awful.

  20. I like how Kaprizov really does make Minnesota an attractive destination for some higher level free agents

  21. What confuses me a little is that the GM (Billy Guerrin) said he wanted the 8 year deal instead of a 4-5 year deal with higher AAV. I'm not sure about that reasoning for a player who will be 29 when the extension kicks in. Especially with the gap in available free agents this off-season, can the Wild even use up their remaining cap if they want to?

  22. it's not a bad contract in the long run, but what this does is eliminate any and all excuses from BG. he has had years to prep for the parise/suter deals to go away, AND NOW HAS HIS STAR LOCKED UP. it is an expectation that the Wild win at LEAST ONE CUP between now and the end of this contract, not a hope they win one. Anything less than one cup is a failure and given how this franchise loves to spin its wheels in mediocrity the fans are more than restless.
