Revisiting The Dion Phaneuf Era In Calgary… What Went WRONG?? 👀 | FN Barn Burner

Boomer, Pinder & Rhett take a trip down memory lane to revisit the blockbuster trade that sent Dion Phaneuf from the Toronto Maple Leafs to the Ottawa Senators 10 years ago today, breaking down what the deal meant at the time and how it shaped Phaneuf’s NHL career, while also reflecting on the earlier trade that moved him from the Calgary Flames to Toronto and whether Calgary gave up on him too soon. The guys dive into Phaneuf’s evolution as a defenseman, his impact as a captain, and Rhett’s take that Dion should have been part of the Flames’ 2004 Stanley Cup run — and how his presence might have changed everything for that roster.

  1. The 'Double Dion' happened during the 2005 World Juniors, back when all of Canada started to really open their eyes to this kid. And we're talking about the 2004 Cup Finals. What a player Dion was.

  2. Phaneuf, Reg Ears, and Boumeister snubbed for the 2010 Olympic team is what the Calgary media whined over and over about at the time.

  3. Peter Maher tells the story being on the plane home from Tampa Tampa Bay after game seven, and Edwards said to him “ you know if I knew we were gonna get this close I would’ve given Darryl more money.”

  4. He was electric the first 3 years. Look at that 3rd year. 60 points. 182 PIMs. Lol. Honestly he was must watch TV those 3 years my buddies and I loved him.

  5. What went wrong? Darryl Sutter went wrong. We needed a center for Jarome and that idiot targeted a d'man who played for his brother's team. Centers he passed on: Jeff Carter, Ryan Getzlaf, Mike Richards and Ryan Kesler. Cory Perry went the the first round as well.

In the 2nd round he drafted Swiss defenseman…yes Swiss defenseman Tim Ramholt who had 3 goals in 30 games in the Swiss A div, ahead of Patrice Bergeron and Shea Weber.

Yeah, hindsight is always 20-20, and I think Phaneuf was ranked 8th best NA skater overall by Central scouting that year. But there were so many good centers available and Getzlaf was ranked 5th among NA skaters. Sutter blew it big time. What followed was just a bunch of whatever imo.

    Great coach terrible GM.

  6. The Phaneuf trade to leafs was bad other team said had they known Phaneuf was available would have offered more to flames.

  7. Dion was good for the first 3 years and a bit, maybe. His highlight reel hits were becoming a rare view. He seemed to miss the net with his booming slapshot more and more (felt like 80% of his shots missed the net). To top it off you could see Kipper was getting sick of Dion screening him for a goal every game. I never yelled at the TV until then! I was glad when he got traded.

  8. nobody expected the Flames to go far that year, 8th seed against Detroit in the first round. Iginla and Kiprusoff dragged that team through the mud to get there.

  9. Dion was made for the pre first lockout era. Open ice hits clutch and grab center line off side. If he was born just 10 years earlier he'd have had a hall of fame career.

  10. I was never a fan of Phaneuf. He'd always go for the big hit and the forward would chip the puck past him and take the hit, while his linemates would be in alone or on a 2 on 1. I was happy to see him go to Toronto. I'd put him in the same category as Kevin Bouchard. All flash and no substance

  11. I liked Dion Phaneuf but you guys might have forgot the guy just wasn't super consistent and has some dreadful nights considering his status as a top 2 defensemen.

  12. Kinda have to give up on him when captain whoops his ass in the locker room for having sex with Conroy's wife.
