Vilmanis hit on McAvoy – Tough Call Recommendation

Vilmanis hit on McAvoy – Tough Call Recommendation

Sandis Vilmanis was issued a minor penalty for illegal check to the head after this hit on Charlie McAvoy. This should’ve been a major and it should’ve been called either charging or elbowing.

  1. This 2 minute penalty needs serious reworking, that is wild to not be a major penalty. Guy jumped like he was in Space Jam! They keep giving the on ice officials more tools and they just keep getting it wrong. It's wild

  2. He wasn’t trying to protect himself. It was him changing his angle for the hit. His intention was to hit him.

  3. I wouldn’t even fine him. Seeing how I don’t see much head contact and was not much of a late hit.

2 minute charging would have been enough (Ik that was not the call on the ice.)

  4. 5 game suspension for a hit in hockey, we want to see hits that’s what makes the sport entertaining

  5. Coming to a stop and bracing is a natural reaction. The chicken wing is targeting with intent to injure.

  6. I think he's gonna get a 1 game suspension.

Not because the league actually thinks he should be suspended for it, but I think the league is starting to hear the noise about the preferential treatment it gives to the Panthers and they'll use him as a way to change the conversation.

"See?? We do suspend Panthers!" by taking an irrelevant guy off the ice for a game, while they allow Marchand Ekblad Bennett and co to elbow opponents to their hearts' content.

  7. Are you fucking kidding me?!! GTFOH with that shit, man…most blatant, targeted, launched elbow I've seen in a while.

  8. This video legit made me laugh out loud. Stopping and bracing for an impact is a natural moment, throwing an elbow out into the face of someone you have deliberately moved into the path of in order to stop them is not. Your entire premise is that the hit is ‘illegal’ but not as bad as Wilson (yea it is) and ‘natural’ (player wasn’t really at fault).

Really fuck off with this. That was a brutal, illegal hit that could have ended McAvoy’s season or career if he’d been severely concussed. This is the exact type of hit the league has been working on getting rid of for a decade.

  9. "Ok well this is very clearly an illegal hit and I'm sure he was given a major and thrown of out of the – hang on I'm being told he plays for the Florida Panthers. Nevermind this is fine. 2-minutes penalty. Find a way to make it 4-on-4."

  10. Not doing that kind of thing as a reaction requires practice, and I doubt hockey teams give too much thought for "safe play" in general. In Panthers case, the practice more likely consists of "how to injure the opponent without getting a game misconduct". Also, Bruins are their toughest rival in the race for last wild card spot. If you look at Atlantic, the current top 4 teams are quite consistant, and don't take stupid penalties.
Anyway, my point is, maybe he could not avoid it, but it should still be a major to teach careless players a lesson. Letting these kind of things off with minor is just feeding the increasing violence in the game. Also, Panthers are a load of garbage without Barkov, amazing if they make it to the playoffs. The other Eastern teams should take a deep look in the mirror if they let that happen.

  11. Filthy hit. Absolutely should be suspended. How that isn't called during the game is mind boggling. Absolutely TERRIBLE reefing. Florida seems to do this FAR more than any other team and gets away with it.

  12. And, how wrong the NHL thinks you are! The place I disagree with you is how you terminate a natural reaction. Vilmanis went way beyond self preservation. His arm and elbow projects out forcefully to move well beyond a defensive move to a punishing offensive move.

  13. Awful take!!!! He left his feet and stuck his elbow out and knew exactly what he was doing!!! Intent to injure!!! 5 games or more

  14. Charlie was putting him arms on his body to ready himself for the check. bud out of nowhere Villamis raises his elbow. That check could've been super legal if he kept his arms on his body but of course not. NO suspension btw joke of a league.

  15. bro you repeatedly said it is a 'natural reaction' to 'explode upward and extrand outward' and I'm going to tell you NO it isn't. When someone knows they're going to be hit their natural instinct is to pull in their extrameties to protect their core where all the vital bits are. To your credit you did say it was an illegal action and he needs to do better but its not a natural reaction to do that

  16. "Not even a fine and I have decided to suspend Bryan Rust for 2 more games"

    -George Parros (probably)

  17. I'll concede that the hit was unavoidable, but Vilmanis left the ice, and he raised his arm, I'm pretty sure jumping into checks is a major penalty and that should have been a major elbowing penalty also because he raised it up. Unfortunate play nonetheless.
