Did the Edmonton Oilers put too much faith in Pickard?

  1. Save for a truly elite goaltender, until the Oilers team defence improves dramatically, no goaltender is going to look great in Edmonton

  2. Jarry is NOT great. Why do you think Pitt let him go and fleeced Edmonton. Hilarious. A lateral move isn't a great move but enjoy. What makes this move even FUNNIER is the fact that you get to keep Jarry till the end of the 27-28 season while Skinner was done at the end of this year.

  3. Jarry and Ingram is the way, we’ve had a rough stretch but I don’t think the big guys are in it. Thinking about the olympics maybe. Shake ups to come as well, I think we are still full on contenders and I can’t wait to see what Bowman pulls off, good or bad.

  4. Jarry is a deal for this year and maybe next year too. Beyond that they either need to find a real #1 goalie or go into a rebuild.

  5. Jerry is a very good goalie and I'm glad we have him. When he settles in and Ingram settles in, we will have a consistency that we need, that unfortunately we didn't have before.
I wish Skinner well, he needed a shakeup as this is his contract year. It's make or break…Edmonton didn't want to be the one to drop him if it turns out he has a bad year and makes himself unsignable.

  6. Skinner is lighting it up in Pittsburgh has a 940 save percentage it’s just the pressure in Edmonton for all goalies. You’ve seen it time and time again every goalie comes Edmonton doesn’t do good gets treated does great. So much pressure in Edmonton

  7. All the "fans" that cried to get skinner out and thought jarry was the savior, you all got what you wanted and now we get to sleep in the bed they made , a skinner ingram tandem would have been unreal

  8. You don't know what you're talking about. I will say that this season Pickard has been bad but how did anyone see him falling off so fast? Skinny did not get them to the finals by himself last season. It was Pickard who won the first series and got the Oil halfway through the division finals. Without Pickard we're probably not even having this conversation about Skinner and I would like to add that who knows what happens if Pickard never gets injured, maybe they go all the way.

  9. I disagree with this take. IMO: 1) Jarry was an overpay. The trade should have been straight-up, and the team could have traded Kulak to practically any team for a 2nd or 3rd-round pick. 2) They were not overly loyal to Pickard. If anything, they were not loyal enough.

  10. I think it’s fair to say at this point that even if Jarr is an upgrade, the problem wasn’t so exclusively the goaltending. The defensive zone blundering has been symptomatic all year long. It still shows up like clockwork.

  11. Jarry will be pulled game 2 in first round and oilers out first round

Top 5 dumbest trades in last decade

  12. I hate how people are so quick to blame the goalie…. it was so obvious that a lot of the problem was/is the defence. "OH Stu cost us the cup in back to back playoffs" come on… the 2025 play offs the whole team sucked after game 2, game 3 they fought lots and was in the penalty box most the time, game 4, 5, 6 they looked absolutely horrible… so no Stu did not cost them the cup… the whole team did. And the cup final in 2024 was a 1 goal difference game… we traded away Stu and now look how he's doing, a 5 starting game win streak… plus their defence got better too.

  13. The mistakes are done before… Look John Gibson and how he performs for the wings – incredible good!! What did the oilers to get him contracted? Last season Phillip Grubauer was set on wavers, a goalie who already won the cup, who was second in vezina trophy, who is good enough to stop for example the avalanche in a playoff series. He has a lot of experience and heard is this season one of the top 3 goalies in the league, nearly in every kraken game 1st or 2nd star. I think he with his experience and Skinner with his young years would have been s great tandem…. Now they got Jarry who has nearly the same cap as Grubauer has….

  14. If you look back at my previous comments, I already told you Oiler fans that you had a top goalie in Connor Ingram. Also no one should defend Stuart Skinner or Calvin Pickard. Your entire channel defended these two. It's actually your fault and other fans of those two goalies is why they stuck with them for so long. It was literally your loyalty.

  15. I'm pretty sure the majority of fans didn't want Skinner to go. They wanted Skinner as a 1B to take the pressure off of him. Bowman couldn't make the money work with that scenario. It was either keep Skinner for another playoff run, roll the dice this summer with his pay raise, and continue to let fans hammer his confidence every time he lets in a soft goal or trade him while his numbers were hot. In my opinion the #1 rule a GM can never break is letting the fans run the franchise. In this one rare exception I think Bowman buckled under fan pressure.

  16. Calvin Pickard is the only reaon they got near the "doorstep" of the Stanley Cup when Skinner melted down two years in a row. There is no "doorstep" without Calvin Pickard. TWICE.

  17. This trade was getting rid of a goalie that was just not good enough to win a Cup for a goalie who is likely not good enough to win a cup. The Oilers have been a long time without a #1 goalie: just a string of borderline back ups. Jarry isn’t the answer but they had to try. They are no worse off, but no better either.

  18. Great analysis. I’d go a step further and argue that the combination of Pickard and Skinner brought them to the doorstep. On the other hand, it’s irrelevant now how good Skinner is—he was simply too inconsistent, and something had to be done. Not everyone is cut out to perform at their best in Canada, hometown kid or not.

  19. Facetious argument.

Its perfectly logical to say, 'Skinner wasn't good enough' and also say, 'Jarry isn't good enough'

No one was ever advocating for, 'trade Skinner for an equivalent goalie who makes more and is signed long-term'. People were saying, 'fix the goaltending'.
