San Jose Sharks could shake up their rebuild by targeting superstar winger Artemi Panarin, whose elite playmaking promises to transform the top line alongside Maclin Celebrini and Will Smith. With Panarin reportedly open to an extension, the debate intensifies: should the Sharks accelerate their timeline, or risk long-term cap constraints for immediate offensive firepower?
JD Young analyzes Panarin’s offensive impact, breaking down his advanced stats, contract demands, and the off-ice controversy that complicates his potential arrival. Key topics include the possible trade package, cap implications, Mike Grier’s rebuilding philosophy, and how Panarin’s presence might alter San Jose’s playoff ambitions. As rival teams join the chase, one question looms: will the Sharks gamble on star power at a critical crossroads in their rebuild?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
I hope not. He’s great but I don’t think he fits the system or the timeline
DE-FENCE
Grier was just quoted as saying he needs make sure he stays patient and think long term. I don't think he goes after Panarin after hearing that
Look for a defensive player and leave the rest alone. Develop the young talent we have. ….and the Sharks have a lot of it!
Hell no! Although the team is competing for a playoff spot, the goal this season is developing Misa, Dickinson and Askarov. There are plenty of young forwards to compete and contribute in the near future. The team already resigned Wennberg and traded for Sherwood. A defensive upgrade would be a nice addition if it does not destroy the team's chemistry.
Contact the Vancouver Canucks and see how much for Zeev Buium. We want a young , talented , offensively minded , right handed defence
I would slap Grier from even considering giving up futures for a 34 year old when this team is no where near a cup.
FUCK NO
Panarin’s a great player, but he’s 34 and would cost real assets. I’d rather roll with Chernyshov and keep the picks — and save those assets for something like moving up for a premium RHD in the next draft.
Given his age, he won't be in the NHL during our best years.
He's not worth a 1st or 2nd round pick, that will get us a defensive prospect that could help us in those years.
Panarin might be worth a lot to a contender, but he's definitely not going to get us to the Stanley Cup finals.
So he's not worth even a decent prospect either.
We're not going to sign a 34 year old to a five year deal at 11m or more per season.
If Grier can get him for a 4th or 5th round pick, or a career AHL player, sure.
Otherwise skip.
I want a good dman, that's it. I think our forwards, including those in the minors, needs to be fully evaluated first. We may have some spares down on the farm who could be used for upgrade purposes at a later time.
There are a couple reasons a trade for Panarin makes sense (he's a great scorer and the Sharks have plenty of cap space), but there are more reasons it doesn't make sense (they don't need any more forwards, the defense is the top priority and it would cost at least a 1st round pick and an important member of the prospect pool)
I could see either Anaheim or Vegas getting him
if youre gonna target him in FA anyways and youre trying to prevent him from going to one of 4 other Pacific division teams,i guess it makes sense. bystedt a first and kurashev make it happen (slightly joking)
I hope this Panarin chatter is much ado about nothing. He fits neither our need nor our timeline. Panarin will be 35 to start next season. Decline is in his immediate future. The only questions are how soon and how steep. Remember, declines arent necessarily gradual, it can be steep and sudden. I wouldn’t give up valuable roster assets (high draft picks and prospects) on such a gamble. These roster assets will be harder to replace the more competitive the team gets.
Defense only. NO MORE FORWARDS.
we do not have a problem up front, we need a better defense.
I feel like I'm going crazy knowing the sharks have Dickey, Cags, LSW, Muk and Pohlkamp. They need one more to have 6 young D men and there is a 22 year old lighting up the AHL for Nashville named Ryan Ufko. We have the prospects to get this kid in a trade. Let's just get some young D that have the ability to produce and then start getting them games to climatize to the NHL.
Vegas is somehow gonna find a way to fit his contact in and win that sweepstakes and good for them. I’m no genius but don’t think a guy twice accused of sa is a great mentor for a bunch of teenagers who are supposed to be the future faces of the franchise
Watched a locked on NYR video earlier and a couple jabronies on there thought Panarin + Schneider for Misa, Dickenson, and two firsts was equitable.. pretty funny.
Klinberg needs to go
Absolutely not. He's a high dollar declining talent
These are the type of moves that kill rebuilds. It never pays to acquire old payers and pay them a bunch of money. It’s terrible move from roster construction…..
It's Frondell 2.0 GMMG is chaotic good
I think San Jose has been catching teams off guard all year long.. I am happy after 5 horrendous years.. that we're looking at a guy like Panarin, we'd get a natural LW to go with Celly/Smith. I am very happy with who we've drafted and picks are "useless" at this point. And could we imagine if Dougie Hamilton would reconsider at the right price for NJD? Perhaps he reconsiders after acquiring Sherwood, then Panarin!!? We are already having a tough time because "too many" guys are contributing at a high-level and are fighting for roster spots, what else do we have to do? I'm OK letting go of picks and non-AHL prospects at this point.. we have a great pool of "potential guys" that are developing/ripening up. I think it would be crazy to just say "well we're not ready, meh… maybe we miss the playoffs" I don't think that's what Chicago said after getting their "core" in Toews/Kane, or LA after getting Kopi & Doughty, Brownie! I would love if we push our chips in without selling the farm (the AHL prospects that are ripening) and I don't really care about guys who we just drafted like LSW going the other way, because we have no idea what they'll be.. and in their prime in 6 years Smitty/Celly might have "missed their prime window" (too late!) I think its now time to beef up and be a real contender, like what getting Karlsson was for an aging core, that was too late in their window. And if we're going for more "low hanging fruit" and we miss on the Breadman, or Dougie Hamilton doesn't want to live anywhere near SAP Center lol.. would Jonathan Toews & Luke Schenn be worth sending a couple of our defensemen (not named Vinny D) and a 3rd-round pick for those 2 playoff studs? This will bump guys like Reavo, and Stapi potentially, or Deli/Gaudette/Kurashev/Skinner would be in-and-out based on line-matchups or whatever, but having great players and pushing chips in now (this year/trade deadline or Olympics deadline)… knowing you got AHL guys coming would make a die-hard Sharks fan very proud!! It would also put other teams on notice that SJS is for real, and going to make a run at it and surprise everyone before they see us coming!!
Pandering not a 2 way player.
Too old; rather have a Dman. As mentioned, would need to give up high assets, for him to sign an extensions, and when you have to pay Celebrini and the other core players, the tail end of his contract would be burden
Dear Dog NO! DEFENSE! No Breadman! And NOT Dougie Hamilton or Schneider…
HARD NO.
Sign a five year deal with a 35yo player? Whatever you're smoking, you better share…
Please Grier no
I would have tried to get him if we didn’t already waste our draft capital assets on Sherwood
50 million? That could get a nice RHD. BTW, since both FanDuel and DraftKings are supporting republicans in US elections I will not be using them.
I don’t want Panarin on my team, we don’t need Panarin on our team, we need defense.
acting like we couldnt use an elite winger is hilarious. if the deal makes sense, GMMG should pull the trigger.
I’m with most folks here, fix the blue line and let our deep Forward group develop.
It is fun to watch these fansbases for Van and NY get sweaty over our prospect pool
I think the main reason why the Sharks should say no is because we already have Panarin (at home) with firework factory. Sure he may needs a bit more years to be on the level of Panarin, but we already have it and sure.. they sent him down in the AHL for now. But at worst, we get him next year
Please no, especially after the Sherwood trade, which was not necessary and cost them two 2nd round draft picks
I agree with your comments and I expect as close to 100% of the fan bas in a "H-E-Double Hockey sticks no."
But it has nothing to do with his past accusations. It is a combination of other things. Many of which you pointed out.
My heart wants the trade, but the cost is too high
Nah I’m good on the Meghan’s List player
