I know this new gen of fans are very tribalistic and find it hard to separate their favourite athletes from their own personal distain for other ones but my god credit to both, we are so lucky to have witnessed this fight.
The rankings in LW at the time were unreal, although fights didnt pan out as they should have at the time but alas; Khabib got his shot at the belt, Conor had his chance to return to the sport after Mayweather and honestly he gave a better performance than most opponents of Khabib and took a round off him but regardless was mauled for the majority of the fight until he was subbed, instantly making Khabib a superstar by dominating the biggest name in MMA.
The biggest fight, most hyped build up, biggest name value fighters, biggest skill cap (Conor’s striking v Khabibs grappling) , all wrapped up into one event.
What a time to be an MMA fan. We won’t get this kind of show ever again, even with Islam and Ilia, it’s big, massive even, but I don’t think nothing will ever trump UFC 229, that was a different kind of hype for a consistent UFC fan at the time.
