Connor Clifton hit Brandon Hagel from behind, which sparked a mass of confusion trying to sort out the penalties, and the players to serve them.

  1. Thank you for covering this. I absolutely couldn't believe it while watching live.

I think major was the right call but think it was a hockey play gone wrong, as Clifton was looking to hit from the side before the player turned.

I admit I was so frustrated with how terrible ESPN's broadcast handled this that I didn't realize Cirelli exited the penalty box at the proper time.

  2. According to the NHL box score, the penalties from the incident:
Anthony Cirelli (#71) 2 minutes for Instigator Connor Clifton (#75) served by Oliver Bjorkstrand (#22)

Connor Clifton (#75) 5 minutes for Boarding Brandon Hagel (#38) served by Anthony Mantha (#39)

Connor Clifton (#75) 5 minutes for Fighting Anthony Cirelli (#71)

Anthony Cirelli (#71) 5 minutes for Fighting Connor Clifton (#75)

Anthony Cirelli (#71) 10 minutes for Instigator – Misconduct

Erik Cernak (#81) 10 minutes for Misconduct

  3. As a ref, it's hard to manage EVERYTHING. Not getting the penalty on the clock isn't ideal. 😉 But, it happens. You assume everything is fine from that perspective. I mean, I'm calling the penalties, I'm letting the folks at the box what they are… I assume everything will get sorted out. Reason being, I have players/coaches/fans barking at me. I'm managing the game. God forbid the penalty box folks — WHO HAVE NOTHING ELSE TO DO BUT MANAGE PENALTIES AND THE CLOCK — do their job.

  4. Isn't the instigator only supposed to be called if the original hit does NOT result in an injury? But the major for Clifton is only a major because of an injury

  5. I think (it is different in juniors – pro hockey from league to league) that they are not required to sit someone for the 5 min major right away. They need someone in the box before the penalty time runs out to come out when the penalty expires. If they don't have someone that can come out of the box they still skate short handed or they get a too many men penalty. I think the chaos came from not putting the major and the minor on the board. That would allow the penalty clock to be accurate when the minor expires. You put anything that doesn't cancel up on the board. I am a little surprised that the time keeper, score keeper and penalty box attendant didn't say something….
