We're seeing now in the fan base, particularly on social media, why Canadian teams don't win anything. Teams in Florida, where fans only care when the team is elite, can afford through revenue sharing to be terrible for long periods until they get an ownership and management group that has their act together. If Canadian teams are bad even for one season, there's tremendous pressure from the fan base to correct things yesterday and go from zero to hero. Even if there is a rebuild of sorts, it doesn't last long and once a team gets one or two very good players, suddenly fans expect unrealistic trades of their 3rd and 4th line players for superstars. Or worse, they think trading away 1st round picks is a fantastic idea. The teams that win build gradually and then luck out on one or two really big trades. Think when Pronger and Niedermayer fell into Anaheim's lap or when the Panthers got Tkachuk simply because that's where he wanted to go and wouldn't resign with Calgary. I think you'll see that more and more as we get more top tier American born players and American teams are able to rebuild the proper way (minus Buffalo). The taxes certainly play a role, but I'm sure when you're already making millions, if a Canadian team actually rebuilt the right way without their fan base losing their minds, they'd stick around.
Alvin saved his job with a rebuild. He still needs to go, I have 0 faith with his algorithms and love for his countrymen.
Not happy since Rutherford opened his mouth in Vancouver
I'm glad Vancouver is last place. That's when the team is interesting to talk about
Losing sucks, I still am not happy at the end of a game where the Canucks are on the wrong side of the scoresheet. Yet I have been very happy this whole season (with a few exceptions – specifically losing to the Leafs.)
Please correct me if I am wrong, but the last time the Canucks had more than one first year home grown regular in the line up was when Bieksa, Burrows and Kesler came up from Manitoba. This season we have had as many as 8 "first year" guys in the line up (not counting Tolopilo). Karlsson, Sasson, Raty, Bains, D Petey, Mancini, Willander, and Lekkerimaki and Reichel. We've had and added Cootes, Ohgrun and Buium and that is not to mention Hoglander, Rossi, and Chytil who are all young and still have more to give. Then let me throw out the names of a few more players in Abbotsford… Kudreyatsev, Mynio, Mueller, Alricksson – all of whom I think will play in the NHL… they are not be ready yet, but they are going to be knocking on the door before too long. Even Danilla Klimovich is only 23. I expect we might even see him get a call up at some point depending on how many guys get traded. And that is not including players who are spread all over other leagues and are not yet in Abbotsford. Certainly not all of these players are going to be NHL regulars, let alone AHL guys…BUT, and this is the reason I have been so excited…
The Vancouver Canucks under Jim Rutherford, Patrick Allvin, and Ryan Johnson, along with so many others including Daniel and Henrik Sedin, Michael Samuelsson, Mike Komisarek and Todd Harvey and all the people I can't name FINALLY HAVE A REAL DEVELOPMENT SYSTEM!!!
I have been a fan for a long time and I have always wanted to see the team putting resources into player development. In recent years it felt like we have had some of that in the goalie department, but the organization never really developed the players we drafted. Outside of the playoff years and Cup Final appearances, my happiest moment as a fan was the day they announced they bought the AHL team. I think Mike Gillis would have started using it had he remained with the club because he was always looking for anything to gain an edge, but Jim Benning never even seemed to know it existed other than as a dumping ground for spare parts (no offense to the players there, but pointing straight at Benning). That changed in the first press conference with Jim Rutherford. It already has been a long road and there is so much more work to do including finding the players that can be developed (which is going to be the hardest part), but this season we are really seeing the beginnings of having a player pipeline for "next man up".
And for anyone blaming Jim Rutherford and Patrick Allvin for the current situation – almost all the players I listed above have come into the system under their watch. (I think Hoglander, Karlsson and Klimovich are the only three holdovers – with some guys like Jett Woo getting kudos as well).
Robert is going to Italy?? After the disaster of him seeing him jinx our tennis players in Australia? I don't like this
So Happy 😢
Canucks: no practice facility, brutal travel schedule, tough media market, decades of losing culture…not a huge draw for top rank players. Rebuild is the only way they’ll have a competitive team.
Hilarious. I flew in to watch the Oilers game in January. The tickets literally cost more than four days at a Airbnb. And my place was right next door to Roger’s Arena. Bunch a great pubs close by too, so the beers were half price, haha.
