Toronto Maple Leafs’ LEADERSHIP put on notice, is Sabres game a must-win?

The Toronto Maple Leafs’ off-ice disorder spills onto the ice as William Nylander gets fined, Anthony Stolarz gets his way over the team’s plan for him, and questions around team accountability dominate headlines.

Mike DiStefano and David Morassutti break down the continued debate about the NHL’s inconsistent discipline after Nylander gets fined and Stolarz overriding the team’s plan for him. The duo scrutinizes the leadership group led by Auston Matthews, the team culture under Craig Berube and Brad Treliving, and whether Toronto should consider a major roster shakeup if their skid continues. With a critical showdown against the Buffalo Sabres looming, can the Maple Leafs find urgency—or will this pattern of entitlement and missed opportunity leave fans with another lost season?

  1. The Nylander finger isn't a big deal. 5K for him is basically a dollar in the swear jar. That fact that he is up in the box laughing it up while the team is getting caved in is a bigger concern. He spends a lot of money on clothes. It's his money. Laughing it up while Woll is getting shelled. More of an issue. He sure didn't look like a guy that was wishing he was on the ice. He looked like a guy that was happily resting up to play for Sweden in the Olympics.

How are the Leafs going to force Stolarz to play in the AHL? If he says no, it is no. It is in the CBA. Standard Conditioning Loan (Section 13.8): This applies to general conditioning assignments. 'Unless a Player consents, he shall not be loaned on a conditioning loan to a minor league club.' If Stolarz says "I''m good" then the Leafs can play him or not play him. They can't force him to play for the Marlies unless they waive him.

Matthews didn't live up to the C on his chest. Wow, welcome to the bandwagon, there is lots of room in back. It is becoming painfully oblivious that most of Matthews' trophies came off of Marner's stick.

The most important game was the Marner game where they got pumped, again. It was a must win with the Avs coming in. Buffalo is hungry to be in the playoffs. The Leafs… not so much. This team should be sellers at the deadline.

  2. Can we not act like the players haven’t been here for a decade failing under multiple coaches with their “just another game” attitude

  3. You guy's continue to be my favorite Leafs podcast. Guy's I'm pissed just like the two of you are. I never watch a complete game anymore. After over 60 years of being a fan of this team I'm finally at the I don't give shit point.

  4. All the shows is the contempt this current leaf team or leadership has for the fans. If nobody can see this right now they never will.

  5. Not only does the Team lose the plot but so does Locked On Leafs … comparing Sergachev and Nylander Bird is like comparing a dingy sinking to the Titanic

Context is everything the Leafs are a dumpster fire and Nylander is a Leader

    C’mon man

  6. It does not matter, as there is nothing the Leafs can do the rest of this season to make up for a complete failure it has already been.

  7. He got fined to make an example of him and to give a message to anyone who would like to do the same. The league image is very important to the corporate types…didn't even know about Sergachev but there's a big difference between the circumstances here, he's coming of the ice, dejected about not making the playoffs. Nylander is in a press box, he could have waved to the camera…it's a bonehead move. No reason to do that.

  8. Makes sense berubi doesn't run the team. Reilly is the worst dman yet gets the most minutes. Stecher been twice as gets half the minutes. Robertson paid the least plays the least doesn't matter he belongs top 6 he is not top paid so no top minutes. All the way down the line the guys who have played the least have played the best… berubi

  9. Everyone on the team except Knies,Cowan,McCabe,Danford,Laughton should be shopped around to see what return TOR can get.
So tired of these guys not caring about losing and putting in 0 effort some nights.

  10. Fire BradTree. Swap teams. Move the Marlies up The whole team. Send all the leafs down “with a pay cut”I doubt it will help, but maybe it would change there perspective. This team and management is such a STAIN 💩 on the Maple Leafs organization. Disgustingly SAD 😔

  11. Go Sabres❗️Maybe they can go in and thrash the leafs? And leave Toronto with Nylander or Mathew’s? I wouldn’t be betting against the Sabres tonight.

  12. I hope they get shelled at this point. They are not a cup contender. Horrible mismanagement of assets

  13. I'm noticing an attitude from Stolarz this season. Prior to getting hurt, he was acting really pissed off calling out his teammates. I might be wrong, it's just something I noticed at the time and now with his refusal to have a conditioning game? The Leafs are rebuilding now, we don't need 3 #1 goalies.

  14. 30-0 is what the leafs need to do to match marners leafs 54 wins a couple years ago.. 28-2 to match last years marner team.. Good thing we got rid of the most valuable peice instead of the trash.

  15. Great show guys. I’m a fan of the game first and foremost and although Ottawa is my Team, I WANT the Canadian Teams (and every franchise) to do well. The latest incident with Willie reveals the REAL problem with the Team and Organization. They Organization has lost it’s lustre. Players need to be willing to bleed for the Organization and represent it ANYWHERE (ice, street) with Pride and Honour. I think Nylander’s apology was worse than him flippin’ the camera off. He isn’t sorry at all…it’s a joke to him. Someone in the Organization, decided a player with no sound should wear the C…my guess is it was Pelley…a Hockey Man would never do it. Players were allowed to do their thing and like kids in a candy store they went crazy. Cars, jewellery, new “Fits” became the story…not the Team. Individuals became THE LEAFS not the Team. The Core Four was said so often it made me ill. Bad behaviour was allowed, egos were blown and pride dwindled. From Pelley on down the Organization was on a slide. He allowed ShanaPLAN Shanahan to make million$ for years and accomplish nothing. He allowed ShanaPLAN to hire a crappy GM. PELLEY allowed select PLAYERS to run the Team and get all attention. Hell, he encouraged it. In ANY Organization there must be Pride. Wherever you go that Pride and Honour must be front and center (I learned that early in the Business world).Right now Pelley has a very bad GM and an awful Coach and again, he is sitting around allowing Trey Living to further screw things up. This Leaf’s Organization needs an overhaul from top to bottom…shit flows down hill. I loveWilly’s game but his behaviour is despicable…but expected.

  16. This is a clown team in a circus league. In order for things to get better for the Toronto Maple Leafs and for the NHL business needs to be done differently. First get rid of the woke idiocy that still plagues the league which allows the players to do whatever they like. Second of all player development needs to be better as clearly only a certain type of player is making the NHL and playing and it creates many a soft team. Third eh look to change playoff format and also think of scrapping 3 on 3 and the shootout. Gimmicks that are getting pretty old. They only last so long.

  17. I will take a full rebuild and a terrible team to actually like the leafs again. I absolutely despise these players. I don’t care that Mathew’s has records or accomplishments, I don’t care if Willy is a top ten player in the league. The day Matthew’s follows Mitch out the door will be the day I can finally start to like this team again.
