TSN’s NHL insider Darren Dreger makes his weekly stop to discuss the busy week in rumours around the Canucks. Dregs gets into the semantics of “rebuild”, and what that likely means in the minds of Canucks management. Darren talks about the Sherwood discussions and the rest of the UFA parts to be sold, but also the likes of EP40 and any other veterans that may have value to someone around the league. He also weighs in on the rest of the market as the Blues get ready to sell, and the Devils try to stop the bleeding in the wake of missing out on Quinn Hughes.

Now we just have to hold their feet to the fire and make them stick to a rebuild. As soon as they cut corners and start doing what Benning did (trade picks for lesser prospects who are further along in development), it's going in the wrong direction. You want high end UFAs to come to Vancouver? Rebuild and when you have a young, exciting team, top players will want to be a part of it.
It's not a rebuild if you did it by accident. It's not a rebuild if your team is still overpaid veterans with term.
It's not a rebuild if you're missing picks in your drafting rounds
Newsflash. At $6,000,000 Garland isn't going anywhere. He's the only consistent hard worker on the team. Focus on moving Sherwood,Boeser, Demko and Debrusk.
It's not a rebuild of you have 2 viable amateur prospects
Trade Demko and Debrusk to the Oilers so they can win the Stanley Cup with Mcdavid!!!
The only reason Sherwood is getting the most trade talk is because he has been actually performing, and therefore is a juicy asset in the eyes of other GMs. The Canucks are in a bad bargaining position but that is of their own making.
But this is the problem with the Canucks and it has been for years – they trade who they should keep, and keep who they should trade. (Horvat getting dealt to the Islanders was such a bonehead move.)
Then they bet all their chips salary-cap wise on players whose performance is "meh", creating albatross contracts which make them untradeable. It is hard to sell the guys who are malfunctioning, but you sure as hell can't keep them. (The "upsell" is that maybe they are only malfunctioning on this team.)
A rebuild would not be trading Sherwood or Garland. They are not the core.
If this is a real rebuild, then say goodbye to EP40, say goodbye to Boeser, say goodbye to DeBrusk, say goodbye to Myers, say goodbye to maybe one of those other Pettersons too. And some of these you will get a bad deal, but picks down the road is what this is all about. Forget today, today is dead – it will take a few years to let great draft picks and youth create a whole new team, but that's the only actual way out.
Are the Canucks so worried that if they lose these core players they will bottom out as a hockey club? News flash! They are already on the bottom – there is nowhere worse they can be.
Here is a good "R word", Ryan as in Ryan Johnson. It is time to part ways with Rutherford and Allvin who have not lived up to expectations!
Ask guys with trade protection. Some where very upset over Quinns trade. Boeser and Garland particularly.
Pattern identified: Over-pay prima donna Swedes, spend the next couple of years tanking, see Jack Adams coaches and elite players leave, then call for a rebuild. In five to seven years from now the pattern will repeat.
Keep Hronek and any guys under 26, then trade every other vet, Boeser, EP40, Kane, Debrusk, Sherwood, Myers, Garland, Forbort, Kampf, Blueger, and Marcus P for picks. Start over because it's going to be a long road and they need to get all these young guys to learn how to play together like Montreal, no more damn floaters…..cough "EP40" cough!
Keep Garland. I like this heart. He is a good vet to teach heart to up and coming and he loves Vancouver
The medical team is gunshy and over-cautious after Hughes questioned Pearson fiasco.
You can no longer call it a 'retool' when the team is sitting at the bottom of the league…
Truly amazing they're still saying the return for Hughes was great, when literally all Canucks fans are looking at right now is Ohgren.
Now, the return for Rantanen? THAT was great. Drury on his own is better than whoever the Canucks received for a Norris-winner. But then add Necas and picks.
Once again Canadian fans upsold on brutal trades.
Myers Demko Sherwood to Carolina 27 and 28 1st. 3rd for 29 but if they make the finals turns to a 1st. Carolina can cover there cap with them.
Come on, Dregs! Blueger was done long before he went on the IR, and Garland is the last forward who should be traded. Not your best contribution, mate.
I would trade Elias Pettersson (40) for a bag of pucks at this point.
Canucks couldn't get a bag of pucks for Petterson and his contract so stop rubbing it in by giving their fans hope. Lol
You don't gut a franchise and play 21 year olds for the next five years. WTF
Garland is a team leader and should be the captain.
Boeser is a heart n soul Canuck.
If the Canucks had four healthy centers they would be in a playoff position and that lack of centers is all on this management team.
