In this video, I’m joined by Big Head Hockey to break down the Elias Pettersson trade conversation and what it means for the Vancouver Canucks as management remains open to listening on just about everyone. We talk through Pettersson’s current play, offensive ceiling, defensive impact, coaching fit, and long-term timeline with the Canucks, and whether trading him actually makes sense during a multi-year rebuild.

  1. If we trade him, we can get cap to sign Bedard (we trade some picks for him due to the fact that he is an RFA this upcoming season)

  2. I think petty needs a change of scenery.
I honestly think he can be a consistent 70-80 point player. But just not on this current team.
Look at his line, and tell me who enhances the teams play? You can't because he has no support

  3. Pettersson's too slow to be a center at this point, I've seen guys on the rush get tap ins because they beat out pettersson in a foot race by a solid 6 feet

  4. I think the issue for EP40 is that he isn't a game breaker without the right pieces on his line(he can't elevate a line without complimentary players). I do think he could probably get back to 80pts/season if his head is in the right place and he has players on his line(a good banger/puck retriever and a flexible/playmaking shooter/finisher, but these are pieces EVERY TEAM IN THE NHL WANTS ANYWAY). Personally, I think Petey's biggest issue a lot of the time is that he'll overthink himself into those hesitations during play, but he needs to be able to trust his linemates to reach that level of instinctive play(being cerebral is great, as long as it's not causing hesitation).

I do feel he could be a great player to have if we get either McKenna or Stenberg though, but the biggest issue right now is the cap hit for his current production. Unless the offers being floated are really attractive, I think it could likely be a better idea to just live with the pain of him being overpaid if we can rely on a game changing piece to slot into his line within the next 2-ish seasons…

  5. It was a good team for a few years but they broke it. Let Petey go somewhere he might have success and regain his once dominant form. Top players don't want to play for losing teams – after Hughes was lost this team is completely gutted. Better to start over with mostly young guys who are motivated coming into the league.

  6. If we trade Ep40 it'd probably mean we retain the cost of them, and we can NOT afford that. We'd end up worse the the Mark Messier trade

  7. I really hope not. Petey is the main reason I became a Canucks fan. Whether he returns to form or not, he'll always be one of my favorite Canucks.

  8. He didn’t forget to score… he’s not invested in this team🤷🏻‍♂️Fair enough… time to move on once he’s boosted his trade value👌

  9. No, we don’t have any potential 1C in the system nor are any of the top picks this year Cs. If we can get a full pay deal with a potential elite C prospect and a 1st round pick sure but I don’t see who would pay that price

  10. I don’t think Petey is leaving even though he has rough slumps. But if you put him in the slot 9 times out of 10 he will score you need guys like this I am pro Elias 😮😮😮😮😮😮😮

  11. I’m not sure how people think we will be competitive in 3 years. We need to stop over valuing our prospects. Who do we have that’s not on the team right now? Cootes Romani and Patterson? The rest already look like busts to me. Maybe Medvedev works out, definitely not in 3 years though. We will be lucky to be close to a playoff spot in 5 years

  12. His 100 point season was an outlier. He doesn't suck but he's not elite. His contract is preventing the team from getting him the proper line mates that people say he needs. He and his agent definitely fleeced the Canucks, and limited their options in a hard cap league. You would think he would use the criticism as fuel to ascend and level up but it seems like he just doesn't have the fire in him. Personally, it makes me sad how he divided the fan base. If he can't put the team on his back and drag them to a cup, I think its healthier for everyone if they trade him. That said, I've seen the way Allvin talks about him. He truly believes in him and wants him to be a part of the Swedish legacy of the Canucks. Even though I don't agree, I could see them giving him the Captaincy and try to see if that motivates him to level up finally. We'll see what happens I guess.

  13. I guess having a NMC with the Canucks is not worth the paper the contract is written on. Why would anyone sign here

  14. Two top end wingers and hes a 80 point center. But hes never really been a play driver. Miller used always do all the dirty work for the 649. Later Kuzemenko would cheat to get open for him.

  15. The team was on a 4 game win streak then he came back. Team back in the tank, as usual. He is not a team player

  16. Petterson needs to have big tough player to play with him(such as Tom Wilson,or a Zack Macullwan)in order to flourish.

  17. This should not be a conversation the only player that has been giving 80 % he's in team tank this year to get 2 great prospects and next year nuckheads have stop having these conversation making issues witch creators need views but come on boys

  18. He has a no trade clause. If Petey doesn't want to go he doesn't go. He blew up this team and all we really got from EP40 was that he didnt want to leave Vancouver. Doesn't really matter what the team wants to do with their core, they gave them all no trade clauses.

  19. He makes a lot of money but you never cared about that???? Dude, this is a CAP league. Every contract matters. You can't pay 11.6 for a 60 point guy lol. That's more like 5 million.

  20. 50-60 Point Guy are you crazy 😂 this is the dumbest take I’ve heard. If you trade him to a good team he’s a 82+ point guy at the bare minimum which isn’t bad with the rising cap for 11.6.

  21. Love how petey stole 11.6 mill a year to have nothing but sweet vacations for that 8 years!

  22. A few things,
    – They need a leader for all the young guys, especially the Swedes
    – How to replace a centre like that? You can’t
    – Need a franchise player to sell tickets, keep interest
    – Need to reach cap floor after they sell off all the other vets
