Washington and Goalie Window Closing…

The Montreal Canadiens fell to the Washington Capitals 3–2 in overtime on January 13, 2026. After taking a 2-0 lead through Josh Anderson and Brendan Gallagher, Montreal was unable to hold on. Ethen Frank sparked a comeback for Washington with two third-period goals, tying the game and forcing overtime. Connor McMichael then scored the OT winner with under a minute left in extra time. Canadiens’ goalie Sam Montembeault gave a strong performance with 39 saves, but Montreal couldn’t close it out despite an early advantage.

  1. Tough luck, but we're still in the race and things can be a lot worse. Also – with injured players coming back, who is going back to Laval? Beck is definitely headed back but considering there are 3 goalies and we just can't schlep them all with players coming back and space being low.

Let me know what you think.

  2. Crying in front of the camera is not immature. He is emotional and shows how badly he wanted to win. NOT a negative, real men DO cry!

  3. 42 shots is not okay. I like Arber recognizing oppourtunities, but I do NOT want an Evan Bouchard. I want a punishing defenseman you can count on and legally wear down other teams, and fight if needed. Arber, as we all know I love a lot.

But he is making the mistakes that Evan Bouchard does every game.

We need Arber to make safe and smart exit passes and posession. NOW when you ice time is low, every one is going to squeeze the stick too hard.

Anyway, there is a LOT to unpack watching this rigmarole.

Monty, stays with it, Fowler should go down and continue to develop REGARDLESS of anything.

We are risking losing 3 NHL goalies, and all 3 are different so systems have to change every time you fuk around with goalies. Half way through, gotta make a decision and live with it.

  4. Ran outta gas! Legs stopped working– reminds me of the old days >>> well 10 years back, when they wd just struggle to hang onto a third period lead…

  5. I think Dobson earned his chance by scoring on PP1 in the previous game. No hate on that choice for this game. Also I can see why Texier might get a crack after 5 goals in 2 games. Hard to argue against trying it on a struggling power play anyway.

I think what makes this game so disappointing is that there was so much to like. Monty was great and it sucks that the team couldn't hold it together defensively for him.

That last goal was a huge mental lapse on Slaf to just slide away from his man and give him the netfront. It seemed like he was trying to cheat it for offence thinking they were gonna get possession. Thankfully last time he made a noticeable blunder (that disallowed goal from him being offside a while back) he seemed to visibly learn from it (a huge stretch to keep himself onside a few games later).

Edit: had more to say XD

  6. A big 2 points considering thath Washington usualy beat the hell out of us.

  7. Don't gamble Fowlers future for this season, send him back down at the break and keep him in Laval while seeing how Dobes and Monty do in March.

  8. I love Dobas, and I think he should be the backup in NHL while Fowler is is back in AHL, but….. He's response was a little disappointing. He doesn't understand why, his metrics are unfortunately the 3rd of the 3 and he should work on it. That said we should trade no goalie. Most teams would die for 3 great goalies and most teams need 3 goalies.

  9. I believe Fowler will be sent back to the Rocket, set as first goaly with a team that will push for a long run into playoff. A good environment to compete and for his further development. Should he perform this year and be a significant actor to the Rocket success, he will start next season with the Habs.

  10. I’m a little frustrated with the organization in the handling of dobes especially after his first loss of the season I really love him and I enjoy watching him play and it seems like they try and take away his confidence after a tough loss

  11. Let Fowler develop, if Dobes or Monty struggle swap them around again.. Team prob aint getting past the 2nd rnd this year.. D needs to sharpen up. Be great to see them all peak in 27 and go on a run..

  12. For Slav to improve as a well rounded, great forward, he has to improve his defensive skills in the defensive end. I think Fowler will be sent down to develop further. Monty is number one, and Dobes number two. The power play has to improve and less penalties taken. However, the refereeing has been disappointing. Every game, blatant calls are missed or ignored and meaningless ones are called. That all said, I sure look forward to every game.

  13. Am I the only one that noticed Nobody Frank kicked in Caps first goal??? I know the puck wasnt on the ice, but Nobody Frank DID kick the puck in, it did NOT deflect off of Nobody Frank, he KICKED IT IN. OBVIOUS KICKING MOTIONšŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļøšŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļøšŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

Also, the way I look at it, Montembeault OWES US a few wins, the team doesnt owe him, really

  14. I just feel like management – and Montreal as a city – has been much more forgiving and patient with Monty than with Dobes. I can understand Dobes' frustration. Monty strings together a handful of decent games, and suddenly Dobes is the odd man out. I hear ya Jakub, it's totally unfair. If it were up to me, I'd wait for a larger sample size before saying "last season's Monty is back". But I'm afraid that Dobes might have sealed his fate with that interview he gave to TVA Sports. Then again, maybe he's reacting to the writing that is on the wall. Many of us have been in that situation with our jobs šŸ™‚

  15. I can’t be all that upset about this game after finding out my friend was awkwardly accidentally cross checked in beer league and will now be in a wheelchair, possibly without the use of his hands. 😢

  16. Fowler is a kid that played 9 games, showed some potential during regular game, but also let in some weak goals. Shootouts are his biggest weakness, he showed kinda horrible performance in it. Never tried playoffs game in the NHL and doesn't have game record to decide if he's good or not and ready in the NHL. On the other hand, there is Dobes who proved he can have a win streak when the team is low and carry them on his back – example: last season clutch playoff run. If I would have to decide which one stays and which one I consider bigger value for playoffs I definitely wouldn't risk hurting relationship with Jakub Dobes in this point of season. It's the worst thing you can do with the current habs goalie situation. Also Whiskey, speaking the truth in front of cameras doesn't show immaturity if management is not treating you right, wtf, In my eyes It shows the ability to stand up for oneself in difficult times. And I think that's winner mentality.

  17. Fowler should get sent to Laval. We need to figure out who between Dobes and Montembeault is going to be our number two goalies. The other person is traded.
We need a bottom 6 defencemen that can play more than 10 minutes a game. It is clear than neither Xhekaj or Struble, at least as a pairing, are seen by MSL as having that capacity.
Fighting when your team is up 2 goals is just boneheaded. All you do is fire up the other team when you want to keep them unmotivated.
