Wow. Didn’t see this one coming. Stuart Skinner and Brett Kulak have been traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins for goaltender Tristan Jarry and forward Sam Poulin. The Oilers also acquired defenseman Spencer Stastney from the Nashville Predators. Austin gives his raw reaction to the trade and initial analysis. #oilers #edmontonoilers #nhl

Only thing I'm scared about in this trade is Jarry's health. He gets injured quite a bit. Skinner has never been hurt. I sure hope Connor Ingram is ready to come up and play if Jarry gets hurt. If Jarry stays healthy we'll be fine. I remember watching him here when he was an Oil King and I said after one game to my son that he'd be an NHL starter. I also said the only way Brossiot would be in an NHL arena was if he bought a game ticket – I was wrong on that one BUT he's only been a backup. Jarry was stalwart for the Oil Kings winning the Memorial Cup – and not, it's not the "Stanley Cup" I realize BUT it's a BIG DEAL nevertheless. Brossoit wilted in his only trip to the Mem Cup, and Jarry shone like the sun. I'm not to concerned with his NHL playoff performance he was a bad team.
As a penguins fan My one comment I said about you never getting Jarry awhile ago looks so bad now. Haha unbelievable🤣🤣🤣 aged like milk 🥛 I’ll eat my words on dat. Lol you even said it should happen if you include Kulak in the deal. Absolutely crazy!
Are people lost? They don’t realize that he basically cost us two Stanley cups in a row cause he can’t stop pucks he said it all along bring out the champagne glasses in the party hats finally
I'd argue a win win because of the Kulak for Spencer Stastney! Kulak has been struggling this season, and the Oilers just acquired a decent younger D-man with much better stats. The goalie thing, I'd argue, is slightly more advantageous for the Oilers based on stats. Yeah, Jarry was on waivers last season, but Skinner was sent down to the AHL numerous times, so there isn't much difference there. Playoffs Skinner was okay at best in the first playoff run, but in the 2nd playoff run, Skinner couldn't stop a beachball, and Pickard was worse. This season, it's the same inconsistency with Stu and Pickard; they just can't play. Overall, this could work. Plus, again, we got a solid defence and a potentially good younger forward. And to be fair, we the fans have been asking for a goalie change since Mike Smyth, and if anyone thought we would get a star goalie like Vasi or Oettinger is entirely unrealistic. My only complaint is that we haven't given Connor Ingram his chance yet; hopefully, we do that in response to Pickard's horrid performance this season. Overall again, this trade could work and I have hope.
Edit: Just to add to the AHL thing and Stuart, he was sent down 3x in a row, including one where he was sent down to the ECHL from the AHL.
jJackson record: signed maxJones, Cagiula, Arvidsson, jSkinner, Emberson, henrique, joshBrown (shipped out McLeod, Foegelle, cBrown, Lavoie, Ceci, Holloway, Broberg) & Bowman.
Bowman has now signed; Mangiopanne ($3.6mX2), Frederic ($3.8m/yrX8yrs), Tomasek, Howard, Regula, Walman $7mX7yrs, & signed Bouch $10.5mX4yrs (dump Kane, Perry,)
As for Jary at $5.4mX3yr… and dumping Kulak $2.7m.. it is not at all clear that Jary will be better than Skinner&Kulak been fine last 2months… Does have risk if bad (can't trade)/STUCK.
I hope Picks is ready to be #1 in goal because it's about to happen.
Congrats everyone on running another goalie out of town.
EDM d would make any goalie look bad
Not sad.
Show me just 1 other goalie that went through 2 different goaltending coaches and never got better AND remained the starter and never played more consistently for more than maybe 2 week periods who as a starter, got pulled as frequently as he did or often let in a string of goals that were terrible (first shot on net, 2-3 goals in a row in a period, etc). I absolutely agree playing around his collapses must have been mentally draining for McDavid and Draisaitl. Additionally, there was some very cool advanced stats tracked that shows Skinner has issues against above .500 teams and is good against below .500 teams.
I'm glad they've stopped the insanity of relying on the Skinner era as he was a total coin flip of whether or not he would perform on game day. I was always pretty tired of the local media that was like: "SKINNER BROUGHT EDMONTON TO THE FINALS TWICE!" As you said in the video – he was 26/22. And uhh, no, the core of Edmonton's offensive talent did. The fact Edmonton can outscore Skinner's shortcomings guaranteed playoff presence. Most games Edmonton won, where Stuart Skinner did well – it usually wasn't an offensive blowout (7-2, 8-1, 6-0, etc). Oiles often won 6-5, 6-4 – so the goaltending was rarely there. It was just Edmonton could out produce the other team they played.
Skinner was genuinely nice as a person.
Good guy ≠reliable goaltender though.
Not a lateral move, a backwards move… the Oilers just got an older, more expensive Stuart Skinner, lol! Oiler fans have run yet another asset out of town, its ridiculous. I’m sure Bouchard for someone’s stick boy is next. As a fan, I’m tired of it.
I know doomsday predictions are cheap, but i don't think this is gonna make much of a difference. The whole team is shaky and inconsistent. I think the fish smells from the head, as we say in germany. Knob is a good guy and certainly not incompetent or something, but the team just seems so lifeless at times.
I mean cmon man how are we talking about how badly we need to also replace pickard and not even one single mention of the fact that we have Connor Ingram in Bakersfield starting to get his game back. like the goalie discussion in Edmonton is so heated we really need to be considering all of the factors that could be playing into this situation. And without a doubt having Connor Ingram plays a factor in this, and I feel like that’s something everybody is missing. Haven’t heard a single mention of Ingram in all of videos I’ve watched or comments I’ve read about the trade.
Crying over Skinner, lol. Skinner was terrible, he gave up soul crushing goals at pivotal moments in key games. I won't miss him, dont care that he's a nice guy. 16:32
You're exaggerating the risk here, this team has been paralyzed with fear not even trying to make a change in net. This is not a lateral move, Jarry and Skinner dont even play the same way Jarry is much more athletic and a better puck handler. There was an even greater risk of going foward with the same goalie tandem in net.
Just when skinner started to play good smh now he's gonna win a Stanley cup on another team 😂
10:25 if we had hysy
Is it to hard to play in your home town
Why didn't our 2 million dollar goaltender win us a cup?😂
That 21 pens team was very good. Jarry singlehanded lost them that series. He shrinks in big games. Mind boggling trade for the oilers
Because of the Hughes trade, nobody realises that this Skinner trade is actually the difference maker. Edmonton will easily wins the Cup now.
Oh but don’t worry We still have Picard! 😂😢ðŸ˜ðŸ¤¬
Stu in Pittsburgh WTF our Edmonton Man could have been Back-Up Goalie THEN OUR EDMONTON GOALIE WOULD GET EVEN BETTER I FEEL AS YOU DO AUSTIN
I am not sure about this trade (smh). I would have been fine with Pickard for Jarry. I was very critical of him when he let in some shots but he has a big heart and you know he loves Edmonton so much. At the end of the day it has already happened with them both having a successful year.
I grew up with Stu, he always said he wanted to be on the Oilers. I’m pretty sad they sent him to the penguins. I think he’ll shine there.
I just don't get this deal for the oil, you're paying an asset and a pick to trade a mid goalie for another mid goalie with more term and salary. I get they needed to get another goalie but why not get something better? or at least improve that horrid D core? Anyways hard to not see this as pretty tidy business from the pens who very much wins this trade without question.
Is Jarry an upgrade 🤔??
You get it. A lot of people dont amd are mad.
Skinner and Jarry both needed a change of scenery. It was probably a slight fleece job, but Kulak also needed to clear cap space. Now he got a new look in net, and can keep looking for a goalie to replace Picks. I dont hate the deal, but we will see how it shakes out.
I hate the focus on only one player In the Biggest team sport on earth
Jarry is Skinner with twice the Salary and with 0 playoff series wins
Now that Skinner has been given a new start on his career, watch what happens when his new team plays defense for him. Im rooting for Skinner not the Oilers.
Oilers need to trade Bouchard. He gives more pucks away than any other player in the whole league that I’ve ever seen. Sure he gets points but he seems to give up the puck when it really counts.
Good riddance to Skinner
Skinner was better than Campbell. Campbell broke my heart so many times
Good riddance.
