  1. I remember when Kawhi Leonard was in Toronto and all the smak talk …generally from American press..that he was losing money by playing in Canada. I saw an interview with a Canadian tax expert who said that if Kawhi signed in Toronto again he would make MORE money than in the US. Good on Hutson. Hope he gets 💯 points this season!

  2. Indont think people understand how big this is to the team and the culture. What it says to everyone the rear of the league. Habs gonna be insane

  3. I think Lane wanted the contract issue to come to an end, and he's happy here and didn't want the contract to be a bad distraction going forward into the season. cheers

  4. Another big piece of the puzzle has now been set, Kent Hughes is a magician. The culture here now is contagious, and precedents being set, players with a win first mentality. Still the youngest team in the league, future looks bright, enjoy this my friends and Go Habs Go

  5. This reminds me of the back in the day's when Player's played for the sweater rather than for the salary This will allow the Montreal Canadians organization to be competitive for a run at a couple of Stanley Cup finals… and who's to say the next dynasty in the making???

  6. Wow if anyone here is an accountant is the following statement correct?

    Base salary: $1.5 million/year
    • Bonus: $7 million/year
    • Total income: $8.5 million/year

For tax purposes, both salary and bonuses are treated as employment income — meaning they’re fully taxable in Quebec and subject to both federal and provincial income tax.

🧾 2. Federal and Quebec Tax Rates (2025)

    Federal (Canada-wide):
    • 15% on first $55,867
    • 20.5% on next $55,866
    • 26% on next $61,472
    • 29% on next $70,000
    • 33% on income over $243,000

    Quebec provincial:
    • 15% on first $49,275
    • 20% on next $49,275
    • 24% on next $19,700
    • 25.75% on income over $118,250

So, at the top bracket, the combined marginal rate (federal + Quebec) is roughly:

    ≈ 58.31% total (before deductions)

💰 3. What That Means for the Athlete

    Total income: $8,500,000
Approximate combined tax: ~58% (includes surtaxes and Quebec Parental Insurance Plan)
    Net take-home: about $3.5–3.6 million

    In other words:
They’d lose around $4.9–5 million in taxes each year.

  7. i'm 41 years old I started watching Habs hockey 25 years ago which is not that long but I've seen high and lows and right now it's nothing but highs and for the younger generation you know the ones that are like between 15 and 25, man I am jealous of you guys, but I'm gonna be living vicariously through you guys for the next 10 years and I truly believe that we're gonna win the cup or if not, we're gonna contend. Soooooo hyped!

  8. Lane contract awesome news. Even better than leafs losing two in a row to the redwings. Tsn will say Montreal paid too much. Then say pay Matthews 20 mill a year

  9. The cap figure is not the number to look at, its how its structured. Knew the contract would be signed in the first few months of the season. Now the RFAs to worry about is Bolduc (primarily if he keeps overperforming) and Dach.

  10. How Lane Hutson is making more money then Luke Hughes or LaCombe is how the contract is structured. 55 million in bonus money is not taxable. The rest is, so Hutson will pay less taxes then either Hughes or LaCombe. One way for Canada to compete against the no tax states in America.

If you carefully look at how Kent Hughes is structuring deals with his players. He gives them loads of bonus money upfront and locks them up long term. Really smart strategy on his part.

  11. The team culture is special. This team friendly contact is so awesome. The top players signed team friendly contracts and don't forget Jake Evans signing for welll below market to stay in Montréal. He saw what is happening and wanted to be part of it. Go habs go!

  12. I said it at first year of MSL in Habs and now it is confirmed.
This is not just rebuild, this is building next NHL dynasty at MTL.

  13. Steve Dangle was literally losing his shit over Hutson re-signing with us.
He thought for sure that he was going to be going to Toronto. LMAO!!
