  1. Jack Johson: fine to not like JJ, I don't listen to him either, but who do you like? I bet I could make some stinging critics based on most anyone's playlist. Michael Jackson, you are evil. Kid Rock, enough said. Drake, go on with your bad self. Or are you so alternative you disdain anything popular? I grew up hating the Beatles, for just that reason, but you can't deny the music. Is JJ too soft, too sucrose, too easy listening, too uncritical? Do the people getting laid not deserve their fun?
Not legitimate to mention James Taylor (Carol King) or any of the historical songbook. The guy is playing his music, live and direct (supposedly) here now. Anyone can understand that people, especially younger ones, want their own music, that speaks especially to their time and place; Taylor Swift would be something completely different if she came 30 years ago. Seems like Chas is applying a 'cool' test to music and its fanbase. Jimmy Buffet, John Denver, David Hasselhoff in Germany, Huey Lewis and the News (he had a huge 'special needs' fanbase), Michael Bolton. Fine to say let's go where the cool kids go, they know better what is hip, as an individual, but as a prescription for other people, that just ends up being, unfounded, preachy and judgmental.
"He just doesn't have any talent" Classic. It's not real music. What you are hearing and you think is good, it is not good. Chas being strong in his own self assurance. Birds aren't real. Take it from the man.
Also, it's surf music, or at least hawaiian 'rock', I think? Didn't he do the music in some movies and weren't they some of the better listening ones? How horrible, how completely forgettable, are the soundtracks for surfing from the 90's through now. I scramble to hit mute. I don't feel like Johnson is in the mainstream, it's just here that I've heard him mentioned in years, and he's a shining light in the dark and commercial surf landscape, spreading stoke and feeling irie.
Chas can't stop being wrong "I just wish people would support him, to be quiet." He is quiet, both as a celebrity and with his sound. Be the change you want to see in the world, or at least think better, jajaja.

  2. James Taylor was a hard working professional songwriter. One of the Eagles tells the story of living below him in LA for a stretch of time and every day, starting in the morning, he'd hear Taylor upstairs working on his music. Taylor worked closely with Carol King, another real pro in the music business and a great talent. Back in the day everyone was really talented at playing their instruments so it came down to intangibles and work ethic, not partying too hard, cultivating your musical relationships. I imagine Chas as a guilty Red Hot Chili Peppers fan.
Chas becoming unlistenable. "Was it (getting laid) a motivator for Bob Dylan" That would change over his decades long career Chas, one imagines even the most lustful rock stars evolving in their motivations, physical and emotional desires, as they grow through life. An 18 year old Bob Dylan would have a different relationship to the challenge of getting laid than a 28 year old Mr. Dylan. Is that not obvious?
