The Vancouver Canucks are NEVER splitting these guys up

The Hughes drama keeps simmering… Jack Hughes of the New Jersey Devils recently told Pierre LeBrun and others that “eventually I’d love to play with him” (referring to Quinn). Whether it’s in New Jersey or elsewhere, Jack made it clear that reuniting with Quinn is something he really wants.

Quinn Hughes was asked about those comments too—his response was measured, focused, and resolute:

“He’s my brother. What’s he supposed to say?… Would it be fun to play with those guys at some point? Of course. We do have contracts… I’m excited to be in Vancouver, and I feel like last year was a little bit of failure. So I feel like I got things to do there.”

What It All Means + Why Staying in Vancouver is the Move

Continuity & Trust: Quinn is captain of the Canucks, a top defenseman, and deeply invested in the team. Stability at his position matters.

Chemistry with the lineup: He already has strong connections on the blue line—particularly with Filip Hronek, whose style complements Quinn’s mobility and offensive instincts. Pushing to break through will be much easier with a consistent, supportive core.
Fan base & identity: Quinn’s presence in Vancouver has become part of the team’s identity. Letting that go would be risky—both in performance and in goodwill.

Contract leverage & legacy: With two years left on his deal, Quinn has time to demand excellence and results. If the team delivers, he can extend feeling confident. If the team flounders, those “play with brothers” narratives just add noise.

Bottom Line: Jack’s comments stirred the pot—but Quinn’s message is clear: he’s here, he wants to win here, and Vancouver is where he has unfinished business. The best path for both Quinn and the Canucks is building on last season, refining their core, and showing the kind of performance that makes “leaving” the afterthought—not the headline.

  1. we should trade Philip…perhaps trade for Hughes brother who is holding out in NJ? We have an abundance of D men right now, some good prospects in the system. use Philip to get some assests

  2. Hronek does play well with Hughes, there is another D on the roster that play just as well with Hughes or better, that is Myers. Myers actually has better numbers with Hughes than Hronek.

    5 on 5 the last 2 seasons:

    Myers with Hughes, 533 mins, 30 GF 13 GA, 69.77 gf%, 58.17 xgf%

    Hronek with Hughes, 1788 mins, 103 GF, 77 GA, 57.22 gf%, xgf% 54.18.

There is a misconception that Hughes play at a higher level with Hronek which is not true. Hughes just needs a D that has some offensive skill to move the puck and make a pass which Myers can do. A lot of people say Myers should play on the third pairing which I disagree. Myers has always played better in the top 4, that is mainly because he play with better players in the top 4. Myers is more than good enough to play with good players and produce. But not good enough that he has to carry a third pairing.

I wouldn't mind having Myers with Hughes and Hronek with MP3. You're not losing anything from the first pairing and you just made your second pairing a lot better. This way, you have 2 first D pairings. I don't think Wallinder is ready to play top 4 this early.

  3. 1) Hughes complains about Petey unable to ignore the noise, and he's the only elite player on the team.
    2) Hughes complains about the team not being skilled
    3) Hughes says if the season isn't a success he's leaving.

“As far as this year, I just feel like last year was a failure, and I wanna propel my game even further and propel my teammates even further and see what we can do,” he continued. “As far as that question, I’ll answer that with my actions next summer. You know how it is, anything can change, if we have a terrible year this year, that’s probably not gonna be very fun. But if we have a terrific year, that’s what we want, that’ll be really fun. Two years ago was really fun. I’ll just leave it at that.”

I'll just leave it at that!
