The loser point has skewed things but teams would sit back before it too. OT was particularly terrible because no one wanted to lose the point you got with a tie. I do agree they need to rethink the point system tho.
Giving a point for an overtime loss is ludicrous. If you eliminate ties, there's no need for points anymore, just go by wins and losses. Would the NBA give a "point" for an overtime loss? I created alternate NHL standings for the 23-24 season, the results: Caps won 40 games with 91 points & Islanders won 39 with 94 points. Golden Knights 45 wins, 98 points; Kings 44 & 99. Flames 38 wins, Kraken 34; both 81 points. Some people may squawk about "tradition" but not all traditions make sense. When the Red Wings went from Joe Louis to Little Caesars, I heard some idiot sportscaster say he hoped they would continue the "tradition" of throwing an octopus on the ice.
