BREAKING: SAN JOSE SHARKS ACQUIRE RYAN REAVES FROM TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS

The San Jose Sharks shake up their roster, trading Henry Thrun for Ryan Reaves. This unexpected move sparks debate among fans and analysts alike. JD Young, host of the popular hockey podcast, examines the trade details and implications. He analyzes Reaves’ stats, playing style, and potential impact on the Sharks’ lineup. Young questions the logic behind acquiring a “throwback enforcer” in today’s fast-paced NHL.

The discussion shifts to speculation about Reaves’ role with the Sharks. Will he be used primarily in the AHL or see significant NHL ice time? Young explores how this trade might affect young players like William Eklund and Macklin Celebrini. The episode also touches on the broader implications for the Sharks’ rebuilding strategy. Is this move a step forward or backward for a team in transition?

Tune in for an in-depth analysis of this surprising trade and its potential ripple effects throughout the San Jose Sharks organization.

  1. It’s obvious, you just don’t like the player and that’s ok! Your entire take on this is wrong. Thank god you’re not GMMG

  2. I can see the point, sharks fans need evidence that Goodrow isn’t the worst player in the NHL, they’ll get to see it first hand now?

  3. Trading a third round pick for Henry Thrun was a really good move at the time, but now we basically lost that third for Ryan Reaves which isn't great.

  4. You know what, I'm glad you have an opinion on this!! I do wish the return was something more. Like a 5th rd pick. Toronto got rid of a liability, saved a bit of cap and got a player who might contribute something, especially if injuries happen. That seems worth a 5th. or 4th. Honestly, its a nothing trade. But I appreciate the energy. Watched the Reaves interview from a few days back and he basically said he was falling apart from an NHL stand point

  5. Calling this trade dumb not understanding we still have another shit year coming up and no one to protect our young core is a crazy take. We will be lucky to be a .500 club so why not get tougher when the pacific always beats up on us and not having any real enforcer on the team? everyone wants to run 12 scoring forwards lol

  6. I like this move. He is there to protect the youth. This might mean Misa and Dickinson will be on the roster. Fighting and toughness is important to set the tone and shift the momentum. The youngsters getting bullied by vets on opposing teams is one less thing they need to worry about. They can focus on their game and let Reaves handle it.

  7. I genuinely think he’s gonna get essentially 0 NHL games, and this was simply to get a DMan off the roster. Idk if it’s better than Thrun getting picked up on waivers, probably cause at least you get someone back. I like the move

  8. I’ll answer the why with one example of how Mukhamadullin took that cheap shot from Vatrano at the end of the year last season and messed up his shoulder and no one did s***. This team needs an enforcer to protect the kids or other teams will 100% take liberties with them. Glad Grier got him.

  9. I utterly loathed Reaves when he was in Vegas, so I totally understand JD's disdain for this move. On the other hand, I will be excited to see some toughness and grit come back to San Jose. It has been a long time since we have had a player that can protect his teammates and instill fear on the ice. Guys like Shelley, Parker and Haley were necessary and effective. Not saying Reaves is that guy anymore but I understand the move.

  10. Dude wtf?! This is so weird given our past relations. Granted everything is different now, but its still bizarre.

Also bummed no more thrun but he would have taken way more work and probably only amounts to a 4th pairing player.

I dont mind it given its more protection for our young players. It would be wild if they got him a stanley down the line.

  11. Misa looks like he’s going to make the team with this move. The Sharks are going to have an 18, 19, and 20 year old as a tandem of top-6 centers. Reaves can do his job as a deterrent with 8 minutes of ice time twice a week. I wish this wasn’t necessary but Celebrini and Smith got a little lucky with their treatment last year. More kids means more need to police.

  12. He got traded to The Sharks because him & Paciorety brokered the Marner deal to Vegas. Leaf fans are upset cause Reaves sold Vegas to Marner and this was his punishment.

  13. Can’t only look at stats or skill. Love or hate him you have to respect the guy as a pro. He has been playing pro hockey since 2007, nearing 1000 NHL games played, not a single team has said they didn’t like him on the roster, and as a bottom tier skilled player he has to be doing something right to be around that long. The young guys will take notice of that. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, character signings/trades can be far more important and a greater asset than just goals and assists. This is why I can’t stand people that always stare at analytics.

  14. Leafs fan here. Leafs fans thought reeves had fight left in him. He simply doesn't. Leafs paid him to fight and he simply chose not to. Leafs won the trade.

  15. Good points made, JD. It seems just the idea of having Reaves sends a message to the team that they must get tougher. There is also low odds Reaves makes the team. He certainly won’t be more than a last guy on the roster. Just having him in training camp could be valuable. It’s not like Thrun is some star in the making. Plus, everyone complains about too many LD. This move removes one in Thrun, and basically replaces him with RD Pohlkamp in the D development pecking order. Orlov, Klingburg, Leddy, Ferraro, Liljegren, Makhmadullin, Dickinson, Cagnoni and Pohlkamp are the names that matter. So you move out a guy who is going to be overtaken, move a LD to make room for a RD, bring in a guy who can toughen up the youngsters in training camp, and just keep around as a last guy on roster on a non-contending team, if he even makes the roster. There could be another reason Grier wanted Reaves that we don’t know about too. I’m just not getting worked up about any trade involving players that offer very little on the ice.

  16. I actually like the trade.
But, it’s refreshing to hear honest, critical sports content/journalism about the team you’re covering. Even though I disagree with your take, and I’m happy to have an enforcer better than Goodrow on the team (because that’s a real low bar there), it’s great to hear the honest criticism of your own team.

The extreme-homerism of some other sports teams in other media spheres (Slusser, Pavlovic, sfg announcers) is really, really irritating and is straight up unwatchable.

It’s ok to be critical of your own team. It’s because we love our team so much that we’re critical when they do shit wrong.

(…I happen to disagree with you on this one… but I gotta appreciate the honest, critical takes of the very team you cover. It’s refreshing)

  17. Honestly I didn’t get why Sharks fans are whinning over this. I get it that Reaves will not be on the ice when Macklin or whoever gets big hit but I think it’s important to get revenge as well. If u injure our player at least you’ll get your ass beaten so bad.

Anyways, my other pov is that maybe we’re looking at this trade wrong and it’s basically just an AHL trade. Thrun wouldn’t get NHL spot even for the Sharks and Reaves could be useless from Warso POV so then they just simply send him to the Cuda.
