FREE FALL? Why Bruins MUST Draft Boston College Prospect James Hagens If He FALLS To No. 7 Pick!
could james hagens actually fall to the bruins at number seven weirdly it’s getting more and more likely by the day uh i i still don’t understand him slipping this far but yeah that’s been one of the talks of the first round of this 2025 nhl draft hagens was the number one prospect going into the season like everyone thought he was going to be the number one pick in the draft before his freshman year this year at bc and now he’s available potentially at pick seven eight or even nine we went over craig button’s uh final craigslist the other day he had the bruins having him available at number seven but the bruins picking calabier instead and taking hagens hagens going number eight that would be wild man that would be wild i kind of understand the slippage just from a standpoint of you know he’s not the biggest guy in the world he’s at 5’11 you wonder how that that is going to project as a number one center in the nhl but let me say this if james hagens is available to the bruins at number seven in the first round they should really say two things they should say thank you and they should say with the seventh overall pick of the 2025 nhl draft the boston bruins select james hagen center boston college and and move on say your blessings and bring in a potential number one center after next season because higgins is going to play another year at bc but let’s not overthink this okay i talked about on the show last week i do love calba i do and if they ended up with him instead i’d be pretty happy i like his size i like his potential defensive acumen um i love the way he plays in big games but james hagen’s here this is a classic don’t overthink it he was the number one prospect going into this year for a reason okay and as an 18-year-old he went and played in college hockey in the toughest conference in college hockey playing against 23 year olds in hockey east as a part of a team that was the number one team in the country for a good bit of the year okay don’t overthink this like honestly i know some canadian fans don’t love to hear this but the way that college hockey in the ncaa is um is churning out prospects it’s pretty much the best developmental league in terms of the coaching you’re getting the physicality you’re going up against uh the kind of players you’re going up against again these 22 23 year olds rather than 20 year olds that’s a big difference and so james hagens i think probably learned a lot from playing for greg brown in bc for a year in the ncaa and a year in hockey east and playing with some future nhlers as well and playing against a lot of them he had an awesome uh world juniors i think he had like nine goals in seven games in that tournament so he was still he was a point of game player at bc 37 points in 37 games playing in the toughest conference in college hockey for a team with a ton of expectations don’t overthink this there are going to be teams in the top five that pass on james hagens because he’s 5’11 and they’re going to regret it they are what i do wonder is it as it pertains to the bruins that number six pick is owned by philadelphia they just traded for a center and trevor zegris okay young center kind of taking a flyer on him do they do they bring in a guy like hagens i mean that was obviously that was obviously a threat they were threat to do that anyway but do they bring in a guy like james haggins who probably is a center but could still play on the wing and if this trevor zris thing uh doesn’t work out he could be your center and if it does work out he can play on a wing uh maybe but i’m telling you i i love kellba i do i like jake o’brien um i don’t like roger mcqueen but if james haggins is there you for you if james hagens is there for you at number seven do not overthink this don sweeney don’t overthink this boston bruins take the kid because then what it will also do is actually build some hype for this fan base because he is going to go back to bc next year and you will have bruins fans tuning into nessen and espn plus every weekend watching bc hockey they’ll be they’ll be at the bean pot they’ll be watching the bean pot they’ll be at the hockey east championships at the garden they’ll be in worcester when bc is inevitably playing there in the first two rounds of the ncaa tournament they will be all over this and for the first time in a while you can actually build up some hype about a prospect we’re not watching the chl you know we’re not watching the providence bruins but we will watch boston college bc versus bu you know bu nor eastern in the bean pot bc maine in the hockey east championship we’re watching all that man and so then you have these bruins fans who is probably going to be miserable watching their team the next season but watching this kid go over a point a game in the hockey in hockey east in their own backyard that’s going to create some hype amongst your fans which is something that you also really need right now but james haggins i think is going to be a number one center in the nhl i think we just got a ton of people who aren’t remembering that he was 18 years old playing in hockey east and the things he would have learned about playing an all-around team game to play for a program like boston college that’s got to be immeasurable imeasurable and scott mclofflin of wei.com who’s who’s one of the guys i really follow um for this bruins coverage had a really good write up um last month about how james hagens is slipping but that that season at bc is actually going to help him a lot um and i did want to read i want to read this uh this paragraph he wrote um okay so it starts with hagen saying i thought i had a great season mclofflin writes he did but potential first overall pick in the nhl draft is a different standard than most it’s really only by that standard that some questions about hagen’s productions arose his point per game scoring rate comes up short when compared to recent draft eligible ncaa freshman stars like min cabrini jack eel and adam fantelli they were all over 1.6 points per game all of whom wound up being top three picks so when you’re comparing him to that yeah it’s one point a game is not going to match up um and and some of those guys to be fair were the same age you know they were all true 18 year olds um celebr his his freshman season mclofflin goes on to write it is more in line with players like mattie beneers hangum massachusetts native second overall in 2021 and kent johnson fifth overall in that same year both of whom are rounding into nice nhl players but required a little bit more developmental patience and that’s what hagens will need they’ll have another year at boston college uh it’s just wild to see i’ve been kind of following some of the local guys draft stocks uh once the bruins started to suck i’ve been following a lot of those kind of local guys draft stocks throughout the year it’s crazy to see how much hagens has fallen uh there was nobody a month and a half ago saying he should be outpicked outside of the top five and yet here we are it’s crazy this is another quote from hagens you’re playing against guys that are 24 25 years old every night it’s tough it’s hard hockey but i’m super grateful to be able to have the year i was able to have with a group of guys that we did have those guys that were able to sign and move on just seeing all the great things that they’re doing now and being with them throughout the year special this year went really well coming in right away and learning how to adapt to a pace of play and a structure of a college level game it was something that really helped me and helped my game out that’s the other thing here the the rapid ascension of the ncaa in hockey over the last five or ten years really like the last five has been incredible for the first time ever i think the ncaa is the best developmental league for a lot of these guys for the nhl they have great coaching great facilities incredible investment uh it’s as invested as they’ve ever been in in this sport at the college level and you’re getting more talent than you’ve ever had you know 15 20 years ago jack eel wasn’t playing at boston university neither was meline celibbrini you know and adam fantelli wasn’t playing college hockey either those guys were were playing in the queue they were putting up two and a half points per game putting up video game numbers and then they were trying to get adjusted to life in the nhl because again i’ll go to mclofflin here he puts it perfectly hagens is right about the level of competition playing college hockey against older more physically mature competition is more of a challenge for an 18-year-old than playing canadian major juniors against other teenagers i’m not saying those are bad leagues but he’s absolutely right there he goes on to say it’s why you’re going to start see start to see more prospects jump from the chl to the ncaa either in their draft eligible season or the year after getting drafted now the players from the q the ohl and the whl are eligible to play college hockey a recent change that has and will continue to shake up the amateur hockey world by the way another win for the united states in hockey because all those great chl prospects are going to come here gavin mckenna the next like conor mcdavid conor bard kind of prospect he’s going to play in ncaa he’s probably play at penn state or michigan state like that’s huge for college hockey that is tremendous for our sport and our game james haggins got thrown into that fire as an 18-year-old and was still a point of game and dominated at the world juniors which is where a lot of these kids are being judged so i don’t see any world where james hagen should drop out of the top five but if he’s there at seven it would be malpractice for the bruins to not draft him malpractice but if they draft caleb dea it’s not the end of the world but james hagens if he is there and he is the guy it makes so much sense for your needs for your timeline for like reasonable timeline um and for fan engagement fan excitement james hagens is the guy don’t overthink this in fact i can’t believe i’m saying this but do what the red sox did in 2021 the number one prospect going into the draft where the where the red sox had the number three pick was a teenage shortstop named marcelo meyer but these other teams wanted pitching needs so they let him slip to three or four or wherever it was and heim bloom was sitting there and saying “this is the best player in the draft i’m going to draft him.” he became one of the best prospects in baseball and now he’s an everyday middle infielder for you third baseman for right now don’t overthink this there’s a reason he was the number one prospect going into this draft he did not suffer a major injury so you don’t have to worry about that and he is going to be a big-time player in college hockey next year he’s going to be a hobie baker kind of contender next year heisman for college hockey and he is going to be over a point a game and that will drum up all kinds of interest for the bruins to the point where a year from now we could be saying they got the seal of the draft at number seven if it’s james hagens don’t overthink this pick the local kid of course he wants to get picked by his local team in long island but number seven if he’s there do not overthink this pick james hagens let me know what you guys think in the comments section below who do you like for the bruins at number seven and how assigned would it be if they
