The Dallas Stars have never came back from a 3-1 series deficit in a best-of-7 series in their franchise history. This is the 17th such time they are facing such a deficit, despite all the daunting numbers facing them with how they are thoroughly getting outscored in the playoffs 54-42. The numbers for a win for them in Game 5 have been a bit more friendly, given that entering this game, they won their last four Game 5s when trailing 3-1 in a series dating back to 2007 and are 8-4 in their last 12 games when facing elimination since 2020. To make a comeback, they have to start with winning this game at their home ice, where they have been comfortable throughout the playoffs. They’re showing the right frame of mind to get back in this series, but they have to show it as they were outscored 13-2 in the last three games. They have not been able to solve Stuart Skinner on a regular basis, as he’s been historically good in wins, with his .985 save percentage in such games being the best in a postseason with a minimum of five games. The Oilers, however, will have to do this without Zach Hyman for the rest of the playoffs after breaking his wrist in a collision with Mason Marchment during the first period of Game 4, and had surgery to repair it. But another key player will return to the Oilers lineup, as Mattias Ekholm, who has played just one game since March 26th with a lower-body injury, makes his return. The special teams battle has also been dominated by the Oilers handily since Game 1, as they’ve scored four power play goals in the previous three games and have killed of seven of eight penalties.
