  1. Grit and commitment beat generational talent — especially when that talent breeds team entitlement.

McDavid plays at an elite level 99% of the time, no question. But the real challenge isn't his performance — it's how, or whether, he can elevate those around him. That’s the difference between being great and being a leader.

Players like Bennett and Marchand don’t always have the flash, but they bring grit, edge, and an ability to drag a team into the fight — shift after shift. That kind of leadership is contagious.

I sense that Oilers fans aren’t just upset — they’re devastated. Why? Because the illusion of destiny — that talent alone guarantees glory — is being shattered in real time. Entitlement doesn’t lift the Cup. Grit does.

  2. Oilers just aren't deep enough, and their goaltending kinda sucks. I don't care how top heavy the talent is, Florida is deeper, tougher and has Bob.

  3. As a Penguins fan this reminds me of their incredible back to back run. Key trades and the team with the best goal tending coming out on top

  4. Theres smarter hockey guys than me that can do these stats but i think there isnt a major difference between these teams in terms of production other than goaltending. Florida might still be the better team overall and this isnt an anti skinner post its a pro bobvroski. I think if you swap goalies you swap this entire series feel and wins around

  5. I’ve never seen a worse response at home than the first period oilers .. they looked dreadful and they seemed to have no energy .. with mediocre netminders they have no chance .. Perry was their best player and at 100 yrs old that speaks to the lethargic Oilers

  6. Despite the horrid performance I wouldn’t count them quite done yet as we have seen it seems what happens in one game seems to have little to do with the next

  7. I've said before this series started, it'd come down to goaltending. And it undoubtedly has. Bobs a HOFer, Skinner and Pickard, are not, whatsoever

  8. Brother. Have you been drinking? The oilers could easily have been up 2-0. A blatant missed call in OT (2 many men) not only took away a 2 on 1 for edmonton, it took away a PP that could have easily made the series 2-0. Therefore, the panthers have not dominated the series.

Also, remember elkholms undisciplined crosscheck in game 3 and the evander kane high sticks? What about this crosscheck very early in game 4 ? Why no PP? https://youtube.com/shorts/8gujiHPfsz0?si=I46OM1IvsYbuwn6G

  9. People refuse to accept just how good this Panthers team is. Sure, the Oilers have the two best hockey players in the world, but apart from Perry, they have no one who understands what it takes to win.

  10. This series is over. Florida is the hungrier team, Oilers been chasing all series. Goaltending for Oilers is like flipping a coin, heads they play great, tails they can't stop a beach ball.

  11. Just proves what I've been saying all along: without McDavid and Drai carrying them on their backs, this Oilers squad doesn't even sniff the playoffs, let alone the Cup Finals. The minute those two stop playing with God Mode cheats turned on is the moment the entire team crumbles into dust. Two elite forwards does not a hockey team make.

  12. Plus Minus:

Brad Marchand has “just” 10 goals and 20 total points in these playoffs, but is a stellar +18!

    McJesus has only 7 goals, yet has a league-leading 33 points … and is ONLY a +7!! 😂

The Oilers top three in +/- are each +10. Four Panthers have a +/- exceeding +10:

    Marchand & Lundell, +18
    Jones, +12
    Luostarinen, +11

Oilers have 14 players +4 or below.
The Panthers have 14 players +4 and above (combined + 121).
    The Oiler’s top-14 +/- are a combined +90.
Their whole team is a +102 — Not too shabby … but not Cat territory:
The Panthers’ team is a combined +125. (This is blemished by Greer and Sturm’s combined – 5; the only two negative +/- players still alive in these Cup Finals).

  13. Goaltending:

Bobrovsky is 15-5-2 this playoffs, with a 2.26 GAA and .912 SV% on 592 shots taken, while playing every game, and weathering 372 minutes of shorthanded play.

Skinner and Captain Pickard have combined for a 14-6-1 (just one fewer win, with one extra OT loss — not that it matters in the playoffs if you lose in regulation or overtime). Combined 3.24 GAA and .889 save percentage on 596 shots against (only 4 more than faced by Bob), while only playing shorthanded for 240 minutes [60% fewer minutes than Bob!*].

    * “But the Ref’s are favoring Florida!! 😭” 🤣🤣🤣

  14. Florida will join the 1971 blackhawks, 2001 devils, 2004 flames, 2009 red wings and 2011 canucks to blow a 3 games to 2 series lead to go on to lose the stanley cup finals

  15. It's destiny, the other greats who lost in their first stanley cup final went on to win in their 2nd stanley cup final. Mcdavid will win the cup this year.

  16. Great review brother!!! Thank you so much! Marchy is playing next level congrats to him and the Cats. I live in Miami and have been a fan since 1996! LETS GO CATS ONE MORE!!!! I still have a left over rat from 96 that I will never throw!! lol

  17. Been saying cats in 6. This team just feels better than last year. They seem to be best friends, clicking on all cylinders, and bought into maurices system. Pretty impressive to see.

  18. I think there is more to come from edmonton in thus series. Florida played well in this one snd deserved the win but as usual everyone overreacts to every thing. Oilers are capable of a better effort and I expect will bring it in game 6. When both teams bring their best the games have gone to OT. I hope to see the oilers bring their best on Tuesday

  19. Oilers just need to keep it simple. Quit turning pucks over at the blue lines. Get pucks in deep and get on their horses, and get down there and hit the Florida defenders like they did in game 1. There’s ways to get around the Panthers pinching guys to overload the wall at the blue lines, because if two guys are there, someone is out of position. I’m shocked the Oilers coaching staff hasn’t made any adjustments to it over 5 games.

  20. Florida sucks. They cheated all night long. Every time the crowd calls one there should be a call. Everytime an Oilers throws their hands up in the air and stairs at the reffs for 2 or 3 seconds instead of getting back in the play there should be a call. Pink Pony Club should be played during every break! Pink Pony Club! Pink Pony Club! I mastered the art of working out and then going out after the game tonight. And what's playing? Pink Pony Club!

  21. Oils have to play the next 2 games like they did in the first game, where they ended up with more hits than Florida, no intensity is not the way you can beat the Panthers, you can't 1995 NJ Devils your way on top of them. So yes, I think they have to be much more aggressive and not worry about being too dirty, they're playing against a roster with some of the dirtier players in the league, definitely too damn mild of a game, they shouldn't get barely over 20 shots either.

  22. Marchand’s play has been off the charts. Carve his name in the Conn Smythe. If Florida wins in 6, the Leafs look better, having pushed Florida to 7. Difference in that series? Marchand.

  23. Fun stats so far … (Expanded Edition!)

    Goaltending:

Bobrovsky is 15-5-2 this playoffs, with a 2.26 GAA and .912 SV% on 592 shots taken, while playing every game, and weathering 372 minutes of shorthanded play.

    * “But the Ref’s are favoring Florida!! 😭”

    🤣🤣🤣

[Florida has been assessed seven more penalties than the Oilers in this series.]

    Plus Minus:

Brad Marchand has “just” 10 goals and 20 total points in these playoffs, but is a stellar +18!

    McJesus has only 7 goals, yet has a league-leading 33 points … and is ONLY a +7!! 😂

    Marchy:

Brad Marchand has the most goals in a single Stanley Cup Finals since WAYNE GRETSKY scored 7 in 1985’s finals — 40 freaking years ago. He’s got 6 thru 5 games.
One more will put him (with Gretsky and Bossey) above every skater in the past 70 years. Two more; every skater in 103 years.

A hat trick in Tuesday night’s Cup Clinching Win (and he was soooo close to having one last night — I wouldn’t put it past him!!) will match the record for most Cup Finals goals by a single player in a single Finals series in NHL history.

(His now 13 career goals in the Cup Finals is more than any other active player. He’s also the first player in history to score 5 or more goals in the Cup Finals for two or more different teams.)

    Benny:

Bennett … Sam F’n Bennett … is currently tied with ALEX OVECHKIN and SIDNEY CROSBY for 2nd place in the tally of most goals (15) in a single playoff season among active players — and only one goal away from first place (Zach Hyman scored 16 last year — but only managed 5 this year, thru game 4 of the WCF) … and only two more goals from soul possession of the NHL record among active players.

Getting fanciful here… But… A hat-trick back home will move him into 2nd-place all time (with some guy named Joe Sakic) and, if he finds yet another gear and manages 4 (if the series goes to seven, perhaps) … he has the potential to tie the likes of Jari Kurri (1985) and Reggie Leach (1976) for the outright NHL all-time record. I wouldn't rule it out!

Re: Absence of McJesus, Credit due Draisaitl

Credit where due, the Panthers have been smothering them … and when they do get through, Bob’s been putting on a clinic.

Drai has scored a trio of critical goals in the finals — the first goal of game 1, and the OT winners of both games 1 and 4 (the Oiler’s only wins in the series so far).

He also scored twice in game 2’s loss, but failed to score in the losses of both games 3 and 5 — not even making the scoresheet in game 3’s 6-1 beatdown. He’s a – 3 for the series.

McJesus only scored one late, meaningless goal (that Reinhardt negated 46 seconds later with a goal of his own), in a 2-5 losing effort. He’s also a – 3 for the series.

    Re: Corey Perry

Perry is a beast. 6 Finals appearances in his career — with 5 different teams — and the last five all in the past six seasons??! He knows what it takes to win. HE’s played as many playoff games since 2000 as both the teams in this year’s finals, COMBINED. And he didn’t even join the league till 2005!!

Still, he won the Cup early, when he wasn’t yet a leader, and he’s lost every finals since. He lost in consecutive seasons to Tampa Bay on two different teams … so he did the sensible thing and joined the three-time champs the next season. And went all the way to the finals for a third year in a row. With the team that had beaten him twice in a row, to win two consecutive Stanley Cups. And then, the Lightning (with Perry) did the unthinkable — they lost.

    Ouch. 🤕

But no worries — just two years later, he was back — on another great team. And lost. Again!! 😭

Does he truly know what it takes to win THAT FINAL SERIES? Maybe it was his teams — no one can win the cup on their own — not even Gretzky. The Lightning lost a step in their third straight finals appearance. But maybe, just maybe, Perry can lead the Oilers — and all of Canada — back to the promised land, this year.

[Patrick Maroon had better timing: he won the Cup with the Blues in 2019, THEN moved to the Lightning, and won TWO MORE CUPS in as many years. If only he’d had the foresight to move to the Avalanche for the 2022 season!]

I wasn’t paying attention to Perry during those previous finals, but I’ve certainly been watching him in this one.

He’s currently second on the team in 2025 playoff goals — just one behind Draisaitl; and three ahead of McJesus. His goals are coming at opportune times; as are his assist, such as on one of Drai’s OT winners.

And he’s a pest. Much like Marchy (a fellow thriving fossil), and, to a lesser extent, Bennett, he can be a brute — yet he’s a brute who can force magic into a puck when the chips are down.

He’s PLAYING like he knows how to win. But he needs more help. Will Conner McDavid finally step up and assert himself in this series? He’d better!! Or he and his team might be playing golf on Wednesday.

    Conn Smythe:

Easy!! — Marchand for Conn Smythe! Not a doubt.
Except, er … Bennett!! Bennett for Conn Smythe!!
    Damn —
I’ve got it! Marchand AND Bennett
An historic Co-Conn Smythe in 2025!

    But … What about Bob?!
You can’t discount the import and impact of Bobrovsky’s stellar play, during every single minute of these playoffs!! (And yes, even when the net was empty, Bob was blocking pucks from the bench … the force is strong in him).

    Gah!!! Florida is too stacked!

    Conn Smythe’s for everyone!!!
