Its easy because we ALL, Ovi included, thought what he just did was impossible to be done in todays hockey a few years ago still.
Wayne has always been open about hoping to be alive to see someone break his record so he could shake their hand. Hes always wanted someone to break it. Just nobody thought it could be done.

There's absolutely no GOAT debate in hockey. Gretzky has more career assists than any player has career points (goals plus assists).
Ovi is not in the GOAT debate. Anybody who knows hockey at all knows that. These dopes don’t know anything.

Number one , Ovechkin was drafted the year before Crosby , he just remained in Russia for that year .. they did both join the League at the same time .. fact check that if you want .. at the beginning of this year I did not think there was a chance Alex would catch Wayne this year .. over 40 goals at this point of his career is phenomenal .. Go back and look to see how many goals Gretzky got in his final games .. this guy is a stud you guys did a great job with it too , except for the drafting information
Just in case you do want to check your facts , Alexander Ovechkin was drafted number one in 2004 , Sidney Crosby was drafted number one in 2005
It is so wild. I dreamt of him finally winning a cup and the celebration exactly as I saw it in my mind years before it happened. The 895 goal as well. Picture perfect. Nailed home both. I don’t know how long he will play, but he will stand alone as the only guy so far to score 900 goals. Who knows. Some dude we haven’t heard of yet may tear it up in the future and surpass 895 or 933 or whatever, but I don’t think it’ll be in my lifetime. I saw all of Gretzky’s career. All of Ovechkin so far and only Matthews has a shot at 900 of players in league today, but he will probably end up at around 750.
Ovechkin does the impossible? That’s a stretch! He broke Gretzky‘s record for goals in a regular season. This doesn’t include playoffs, Gretzky still has 122 more goals total. That’s important because part of being a great player is helping your team be successful in the postseason.
Wayne Gretzky has 2857 points (goals and assists combined ) in his career. Ovechkin has 1620 points (goals and assists combined ) in his career Gretzky has 1963 assists, so if Gretzky never scored one goal in the NHL, he would still have more points than Ovechkin. do the impossible would be breaking Gretzky‘s record for most points! That is the most impressive statistic that Gretzky holds! If he never scored one goal in the NHL, he would still have more points than anybody in history.
