NJ lost Markström to injury and 2 defenseman. I think people underestimate how good a shutdown pair Kovacevic and Siegenthaler were. Dougie created offense and was better defensively this year than probably ever, and he's been out too.
Then losing Jack on top of that was a big reason for their struggles. But they held on to their spot when many thought for sure they'd fall out. So, making it sound like they were just bad for no reason after Christmas is a bit unfair. They did struggle in January before the injuries, but a lot of teams go through slumps at some point in the year.
