The Leafs essentially replaced Dewar at centre with Laughton, and replaced Timmins on defense with Brandon Carlo.
That's an upgrade in my book. Laughton & Carlo are players who can handle the playoff grind perhaps moreso than their predecessors, respectively.
Not the 'splashy' type of moves compared to Rantanen or even Marchand, but moves the Leafs made to address two positions in the lineup that needed a boost. Carlo could be paired up with Rielly on defense now maybe.
The Leafs have noticeably been 'sputtering' a bit these last couple of games what with all the chatter surrounding the deadline, but now they have their lineup or will have their lineup eventually set up for the final 20-game stretch & no more 'rumor mills' to worry about for the rest of the season. Now the focus should be on not just securing a solid spot for the playoffs, but MAYBE even securing the 1 seed in the Atlantic. Because they probably wouldn't want to have face BOTH the Lightning AND Panthers in the playoffs. If the Leafs can finish atop the Atlantic, they would then instead meet one of the wildcard teams to open the playoffs – which WON'T be a 'layup' either for the Leafs, but perhaps their chances would be better facing either one of the Sens, Rangers, or CBJ to open the playoffs. Granted, their most recent playoff history doesn't exactly have a ringing endorsement of success as has been well-documented. I guess we just have to hope & believe that for once this team is now constructed for at least two playoff rounds. Eh, we'll just have to wait and find out I guess.
