It’s time for the Tri-series finale. New Zealand secured their spot in the final with clinical performances against Pakistan and South Africa. On the other hand, the hosts bounced back in style, chasing down a record total in a virtual semi-final against South Africa after dropping the series opener to the Kiwis. In the summit clash of the Tri-series, New Zealand will face Pakistan at the National Stadium in Karachi on Friday (February 14).
Both New Zealand and Pakistan have lost a player each during the course of this Tri-series. New Zealand are sweating over Rachin Ravindra’s fitness ahead of the Champions Trophy after the opening batter was hit on the head while attempting to take a catch in the deep, losing sight of the ball. Meanwhile, Pakistan played their last game without Haris Rauf, who suffered a muscle sprain in his lower back during the first ODI of the series.
In their last match, Pakistan bowled first against South Africa and conceded 352/5 in 50 overs. Three Proteas batters, Temba Bavuma, Matthew Breetzke and Heinrich Klaasen all fell in the 80s. Kyle Verreynne remained unbeaten on 44 off 32 while Corbin Bosch hit 15 off just nine deliveries.
Shaheen Afridi was the pick of the bowlers for the hosts, taking two for 66 from his 10 overs. Naseem Shah and Khushdil Shah bagged one wicket each.
In reply, Pakistan lost Babar Azam in the seventh over. Saud Shakeel followed him back to the pavilion inside the powerplay. Fakhar Zaman looked good during his 28-ball 41 but he too perished in the 11th over.
Agha Salman and Mohammad Rizwan then put on a marathon 260-run stand for the fourth wicket to put Pakistan on the brink. Agha Salman was dismissed for 134 by Lungi Ngidi but the damage was already done by then. Captain Rizwan remained unbeaten on 122 off 128 balls to take Pakistan over the finish line and set up a mouthwatering final against New Zealand.
On the other hand, New Zealand had defeated South Africa in their second game to reach the final. The also bowled first and conceded a score in excess of 300. Matthew Breetzke scored a record-shattering 150 on his ODI debut.
However, a century from Kane Williamson and an innings of 97 from Devon Conway took New Zealand to a comfortable win.
