TIME TO TANK? RED WINGS SEASON CHECK-IN & COSSA’S CASE TO PLAY – Winged Wheel Podcast – Dec. 8, 2024

Has reality set in on the Detroit Red Wings season?

Tune in as we start by discussing Derek Lalonde’s squad’s two most recent losses, including a late heartbreaker against Brady Tkachuk’s Ottawa Senators (including a brutal call on Marco Kasper, Alex DeBrincat scoring against his former squad, Norris beating Husso, & more) (4:25) and a “same old” loss against the Colorado Avalance (including Lucas Raymond’s goal off a Dylan Larkin shot & not much else) (16:00). We then get into whether this season is a write-off and Steve Yzerman’s Hockeytown team is truly in tank mode for Hagens, Schaefer, Martone, Frondell, or Misa, with players like Kane, Compher, Copp, Tarasenko, and others not performing and only the likes of Larkin, Raymond, DeBrincat, Moritz Seider, and Simon Edvinsson carrying the team (20:40).

We then discuss how bad the rest of the Atlantic has been including the Buffalo Sabres, Montreal Canadiens, and Ottawa Senators, before discussing whether Sebastian Cossa should get playing time with Alex Lyon and Cam Talbot still out (39:48).

Finally, the Jacob Trouba saga ends, how Steve Yzerman and the Detroit Red Wings played into the story, Drury escaping the contract and paying Shesterkin, & more (including Luke Richardson being fired) (52:55) before we take your questions & comments in our Overtime segment (1:05:35) – enjoy!

  1. The UFA splurge in 2022 just was not the time for the big spend. They should have took their lumps and tried to add top 5 talent. Or Ilitch Inc told SY to get the team competitive to put fans in the stands.
Luckily SY did not resign David Perron. Perron is done with 6 points and should be about retired right now.

  2. Yes it’s time to tank, the team looks rudderless and unbothered, they’ve got maybe six or seven players worth a damn, the rest are trash

  3. FIRE YZERMAN! I just watch highlights now, I can't waste valuable time after work to watch this pathetic excuse of a team. Fans in attendance should start getting more vocal and throw trash on the ice.

  4. Sell assets get a top 4 pick next draft , use the assets acquired to make bigger moves and prepare to come back next season.

  5. Most concerning is Seider is regressing. He was supposed to be in the Norris conversation by now. He's not anywhere close.

  6. I don't know that much about cap space, but wouldn't we have better off paying Raymond and Seider over a period of maybe 2 years so that we wouldn't have had to give away other players that could have helped us be a more complete team???

  7. 0% chance Yzerman resigns debrincat longterm , deal him now get a 1st + .. resign Lyon and take advantage of talbot’s strong play and eat some salary and send him to a cash strapped contender for another 1st. Eat salary off compher while he can still be moved, Deal Kane, tarasenko etc… use those 1sts and assets and go get some young players with huge upside like a zegras(doesn’t have to be him specifically)that can be here longterm

  8. Seider’s point totals are getting worse by each year. This guy might not be a true number one. Hopefully edvinsson or pelika can become that.

  9. Last year, Yzerman accidentally put together a halfway decent roster, almost tripped into a playoff berth last year, and it seems to have ruined this fanbase's psyche. We really should've sold players(Kane, Perron, Ghost, Walman, etc. ) last years deadline for draft capital/ higher end developed(close to NHL) prospects and strapped in for another painful 3-5 years. Cause accidently being decent last year might set this team back a couple years unintentionally. I think we'll know what we are truly by 2027.. as in Yzerplan zero hour where we should be perennial playoff contenders or he's gotta be fired. No questions. No blurred lines.

  10. Why is it that teams that started rebuilding after Detroit are already playoff contenders again?

  11. Let's be honest that ref got fired for getting caught saying what he said. Not because he said it

  12. How many times are we gonna beat our heada against the wall into a mush over draft lottery luck?

    I'm tired of waiting.

  13. As part of the ongoing tragedy of the Red Wings’ failing rebuild, there’s nothing franchise-saving coming in this year’s draft worth tanking for.

  14. They don't have to Tank Steve Y has build this bad team you knew this would happen he did to improve this defense that suck last yr

  15. Tank this season!!
Just trade for some draft picks and lets build a young but strong team that will compete for years to come

  16. If they'd stop playing to protect the tie (or to protect being down one goal) in the third we might possibly win a couple more games. I blame Gru for not adjusting his system to match the players he has. Agree SY also made some bad signings, but this team is not as bad as they are playing and that belongs to the coaching staff on some level.

  17. I gave up on the Wings in the least few seasons with GM Kenny Holland. I spent years watching the Lightning, the Panthers, and the Bruins. Waiting patiently for a Red Wings team worth watching. Last season I returned to supporting the Wings. This season has been more difficult to watch. I now watch the Pistons, as I have more faith in their future. Time for the Wings to go back to lottery picks. This is the Darkness of Harkness era 2.0. The Yzerplan is a bust.

  18. Steve Yzerman should be fired if they don’t make the playoffs this season. For the Steve-bot defenders I ask you this, name me a job that gets 6 or more years to produce a quality product? It’s year 6 and they have the 5th fewest points in a 32 team league. Accepting where they are this season is a loser mentality.

  19. Sticking with the same old uncle Fester system where you score one goal per game. I have no patience left for the management of this team. The FA signings and the coaching system is so embarrassing. I truly believe some of our players are regressing because of this system.

I still love Kane. I’m also a Panthers fan, I would love to see him on the Cats, but their forward group is already pretty damn good. He would be perfect for the Panthers though, would be free to showcase his unique skill with physical protection and skilled forwards around him.

  20. My son and I had preliminary plans to fly from Texas to Detroit in January and catch a Griffins and Red Wings game. Weve decided if we want to see professional hockey we'll drive to Dallas. We are close to checked out.

  21. old team, poor up the middle, defensive system because of a lack of talent. nobody makes big moves in hockey so the real chance has to be to dump for whatever picks you can at the deadline and then don't worry about getting GR more experience. bring up a few of them. you can send some back down after the season for the griffins playoff run. exception being hossa, who I would let marinate in GR this year. give me another crack at the lottery and get ready for next year. IMO. LGRW!

  22. I was watching Lalonde’s comments after the Colorado game and he is completely clueless. According to him, they just need to change a couple of small things. No, Derek, nothing is working, nothing! Not just a couple of small things.

  23. RW has twelve teams ahead of itself in the cap race regarding expected and current base. The teams are in descending order B's, Jets, Pens, Hawks, Rags, Sabres, Preds, Utah, Sharks, Ducks, Flames and Blue Jackets (PuckPedia) .

Very few fans & tubes include Ilitch Holdings Inc influence and the choices made by the company to prevent current audience revenue from showing decline where the differences between the last 5 years and 10 years are visible to the naked eye today.

How can a room not feel all the negative exposure that the insiders in the team are constantly exposed to. They are, after all, people with thoughts and feelings like everyone else. Even says it best himself, they are only collectively bad and last against Ott there is no air left in Derek's lungs and completely lacks energy.

So yes, tank mode is the best scenario and I agree with most of the names, with the exception of Kasper & Burger as they are part of the future and you don't throw them under the yellow bus so easily. Even if the basic attitude is that they don't make much difference this year, they should get the same offer as everyone else "an honest chance".
