My problem is that if matthews and marner were on any other team they make 10 mil or less. I like the contracts he signed this off season but the 2 contracts that mattered he overpayed in my opinion
Trading Marner now makes no sense right now. We need marner for a couple cup runs then unload this guy and his stupid contract. Marner is not a true blue leaf in my mind. Mitch Marner is suckling a lot of money and energy from the team and dubas has to figure out an extension for this player and if you can't agree now then you set up for the big trade. Trading marner means you don't have to deal with ferris again and daddy Paul Marner. The kid is good but let's see how good and how Dubas handles this because he messed up. Nobody will ever say that Marner is a bad player, quite the opposite he’s brilliant….but if he is earning 11mil plus as a winger then he has to have a playoff run/ring on his resume or be a franchise player (Ovechkin, Kane etc). He got that deal despite not having those things on a team that was already massively expensive up front. If Dubas was a good negotiator then that deal comes in at like 10 mil max. If someone like Rantanen who is a point per game player gets like 9 mil then Marner is not worth 11 mil. Dubas has gotten the smaller deals right and done well but had to overpay the bigger ones.
How can you say Toronto doesnt have a bad contract on the team. They are the poster team for giving out too much money what the player is worth… when you paid 11 mil whether it's marner Mathews Tavares you MUST produce in playoffs! Win in playoffs!

The Mitch Marner contract is a joke. To say otherwise is flat out wrong. Flat out wrong.
There is no scenario where an RFA winger off their entry level should be making 10+ a year.
Steve's metaphor is more accurate if they have the 4 walls with the nice house but now they have no money to pay the electric bill.
Dubas lost the Marner negotiation and lost the Nylander negotiation (by allowing to go on as long as it did, then signing him for more than he was worth at the time). Marner should not be making 11 million. No team would sign Marner to that much coming out of his RFA. Adam HIMSELF was arguing back then that Dubas lost that negotiation and was asking why no one takes a discount to want to play for the Leafs. Dubas did a good job this off season, but he was bent over a barrel in all of his biggest signings before this.

Oohhhhkay hold up there gentlemen. Before we address Dubas, let's address the critique of the Matthews, Marner, Tavares, and Nylander contracts…. If you truly believe that Matthews is worth McDavid money (not just in his talent, but ALSO his character, his compete level, his off-ice image, AND his team leadership) then there's already a huge divide in how we see things. Is he a bad player? Of course not, he's an elite talent…an elite talent who also loves video games more than practicing (according to some media reports), loves goofing off like a 19yr college student and getting into legal trouble when nobody's watching (remember how we LOVED to rip Dany Heatley for doing that?), loves being emotionally unresponsive and doesn't show any leadership to the team…etc (you get the idea). So until he IS the next Toews, McDavid, Crosby, let's not pay him like he is ok? I would've been ok with a contract 'in the neighbourhood' of an elite leader which is about 1.5mil less than he's getting now.
Now onto Tavares. Here we have the opposite situation –> AMAZING leader, good character, good with the media, and sets a good work ethic for his team…but is he an elite level talent? No. He's an all-star level talent, but he's not the best of the best in terms of centres. You've got about 6-7 centres in the league who are more talented. So again, should we pay him like McDavid & Crosby? Nope, we should've paid him NEAR as much but not the same. So I'm thinking 10mil was also best for him.
Marner? I've always been a fan, since his junior days, and I was actually among those who said he SHOULD be paid the same as Matthews (and talent wise I think he still should). But once he decided to pull a Nylander and blackmail the team into another 11-mil contract it showed me his character really isn't that much different from Nylander & Matthews so again, I ask if he's worth an elite level salary when the team comes last and his self-interest comes first?
And Nylander… the guy who started it all. Sat out half the season (remind me again what happened that season with the Leafs win/loss record of him out of the lineup vs. him IN the lineup? And hey I'm sure he didn't mean to laugh during that one giveaway goal against Boston as he stood by the Leafs bench watching his defensive mistake during a playoff game…and if media reports are accurate, I'm sure he isn't anywhere near as arrogant, entitled or lazy as people say off the record) 6.7-million per season? Suuuure, why not, I mean there's only a bunch of similar level players out there with better work ethic, better personal skills, and better contracts, but hey, what do I know, I'm not a master GM like Dubas…
So is Dubas the "King Deal Maker" in an off season where everyone is having to settle for less than they'd get any other year? In a year where tons of free-agents aren't being signed because they don't realize money (and cap space) is tight across the league? In a year where players who already have their biggest contract years behind them just want to sign anywhere that's got talent in the top-half of the league for a chance to win a cup? No. Dubas isn't a horrible GM (below avg I'd argue but not in the bottom 5), but to say he's really good because of fortunate circumstances working out his way is just…well….a very Dubas thing to say. 😉

He's not a bad negotiator. But he "lost" three deals in a row that cost him the most money. If he had saved a million dollars on each of the three young guns… there's Johnsson or Kapenan. If nothing else, he seems to have learned from those negotiations.
John Tavares, regardless what he got paid or could have been paid elsewhere is not what the Leafs needed! I could have lived with Kadri's two brain farts along the way, and just maybe they wouldn't have happened if the Leafs brass had not told him, we don't really believe in you, so we are signing Tavares. The Tavares money set the bar for at least Matthews and Marner. I guess the Leafs brass thought the Cup was going to walk through the door down at the ACC. That $11. million in the bank would really look good right about now. The Leafs wouldn't have been farther away from the cup if they didn't sign Tavares, in hindsight anyway. The entire blame without doubt goes on Shanahan's shoulders, and not Dubas'. When Shanahan was hired the future looked bright, but he has long since dropped the ball. Kyle Dubas = John Ferguson Jr. OUCH!!!! By the way, where is Mark Hunter anyway?

The reality is I don’t think he’s good enough right now to play more than a 13th forwards, so why not ask for 700-800k on a one way deal like Dell and go play for the Marlies and score you 60 points

The Nylander negations threw away a whole season. Leafs were amazing and then stunk when he returned. The whole focus changed and momentum was ruined. We wasted John Taveres' prime year and Reilly's best year so far on that issue. It will take a while before that negotiation… what it did for precedent for Matthews and Marner to not even consider anything slightly team friendly? Dubas now is changing his speedy philosophy quickly because his speedy waves experiment failed as everyone knew it would. Dubas is now not being Dubas and maybe that's a good thing.
Adam hit the nail on the head. Dubas paid a premium for PREMIUM players, but he has saved millions on bargain signings that other GMs SO OFTEN overpay for. Put that narrative to bed, I agree
