McQueen this year, and then McKenna next year? That’d be pretty handy.
The Flames aren’t going to tank the way many fans want them to. Their strategy for the foreseeable future will be:
* Trade away one or two veterans for picks, prospects, and young players in the offseason.
* Sign free agents who are looking for increased opportunity to short term contracts to fill holes in the roster.
* Go into the season with the mindset to win as many games as possible.
* Trade away pending free agents at the trade deadline for picks, prospects, and young players.
* Bring up young players from the AHL and give them the opportunity to prove they belong in the NHL.
* Acquire cap dumps who are also rebound candidates.
To a certain extent, the team will be repeatedly torn down and rebuilt. It will be a bottom 10 team in the league until a new core appears, but it will likely never be a bottom 3 team.
How are we supposed to “go for it” this year? This team is garbage.
No they can’t go for it this year. They will lose the good 1st round pick if we are outside the bottom 10. For a rebuilding team that would be the dumbest thing we could do
Florida can go for it. We can tank and draft a top centre
That way the Mony deal only looks atrocious and not catastrophic
Vegas or potentially New Jersey can tank in 25-26. Then we can add MacKenna to our Stanley Cup winning roster.
