Today we’re talking about the James Neal trade between the Edmonton Oilers and the Calgary Flames back from 2019. The real deal saw James Neal get traded to the Flames for Milan Lucic and a 3rd round pick in 2021. That pick was then sent over to the LA Kings for a few more picks still in the 2021 draft.

oilers won short term flames win long term
THE REALLL DEALLL
They opened up cap space from this buyout to give Darnell Nurse the equivalent of a lotto max jackpot. Now he can afford his own private Nurse. Gigiddy.
Keer-Sah-Nahv . It's only 3 syllables.
He's my cousin
Flames FLEEEECED the Oilers
It's not necessarilly finalized. I mean Lucic could be traded before all is said and done as well.
Flames were like whynot draft him
Oilers missed lucics grit in the playoffs. Holland bought out neal just to sign ceci to a bad contract and than took Keith’s with no retention 🤣
It's nice of Edmonton to pay Lucic to play in Calgary…oh and thanks for the free draft pick too!
James Neal > mathewes
How can return for Neal be done? Seems like an Edmonton centric point as their contribution is done, but Calgary now has 2 prospects & Lucic, and as long as any of them are with the team there is potential for even greater return. Pretty good deal for trading away a washed up one dimensional player on the steep decline.
Every year in free agency aging veterans are given these crazy contracts that more often than not fizzle over time. I remember how much hype Lucic had upon hitting free agency and yes I was a little upset that Vancouver couldn't get him (yes there was speculation). Boy am I glad. Coleman, Hamilton, Hyman, Tatar, we'll see if this group earns their keep but I doubt it.
Anyone that says Edmonton Lost is not looking at it hard enough. Edmonton was able to get out of a really bad contract that PC went too far with. Lucic was good the first year but as McDavid and Leon got better the team got faster and Lucic fell behind he even stunned puljujarvi growth. With Holland somehow finding a way to get out of that bad contract and replace it with one that’s more buyout friendly was a plus. I did like Neal but I knew the deal was made for buyout purposes later on. This will go against Edmonton’s cap for a few years but it’s not dead cap on the team anymore and opens a roster spot for a new up and coming player. Calgary is forced to keep lucic on the team no ones taking that contract still can’t believe Calgary did they could have just bought Neal out too but they took lucic and as an oilers fan I’m still laughing at that. Edmonton looks better off then Calgary right now I’d say Edmonton won.
Lucic always looked slow on the Oilers, on the flames is doesn't look that slow.
Whynot must be a common East Coast name. 23 years ago, when I was still in high school, there was a hockey tournament at my school with teams from all over Canada, and from a school in Nova Scotia, there was a guy with that exact surname. I remember because of how weird it was, and we did make quite a few jokes about it…if we'd had memes, he'd certainly have starred in them for a week. So either Cameron Whynot is related to this exact guy…or it's just not an uncommon name. And seeing as how I just got 294 results when searching the name online (JUST FOR NOVA SCOTIA…nowhere else has anywhere near that many…second-highest in Canada is just 29 in Ontario, because that's the first place East Coasters move to get away from…East Coasters…and New Brunswick is third, with 9…which you'd expect given its geographic proximity), the latter seems to be correct. Some English/Scottish/Irish dude with a strange name moved his family to Canada 300 years ago, and now we have hundreds of Whynots.
Looch looked like the hutch back of ……
Looch is only owed $6.5M total for 2021-22 and 2022-23 now that his annual signing bonus has been paid.
Essentially, $3.25M in actual cash per season. The average NHL salary is $3.54M ($81.5M / 23 players on a roster).
His cap hit is higher ($5.25M) but the Flames could conceivably trade him to a team with tons of cap space looking to hit the cap floor while saving actual cash.
But why would they? He’s a valuable third liner. He’s a leader, plays a good possession game, hits a ton and will fight anybody.
Slightly overpaid but not a bad contract at this point.
