AN argument could be made soon that McDavid and Draisaitl are hurting Edmontons long term success.
My point being, that when Edmonton drafted McDavid, they were terrible, and barely had a NHL level roster and were up till that time and were a league wide punching bag and a model for bad drafting and development. People were hoping that McDavid didnt end up an Oiler because hockey fans felt the Oilers had squandered too many high end picks and that someone else deserved the chance to draft McDavid.
McDavid came in so good right away, when the team shouldve had a few more years drafting in the top 10 to fill out their prospect depth. McDavid, however by being so good, prevented the team from drafting more of the high end talent that they need (especially on D).
Edmonton is a team with a lot of shortcomings, but Draisaitl and McDavid make them too good to address those shortcomings through the draft. The result is having to trade for aging players to shore up roster spots, Ekholm looks to be getting older and has a large contract with term.
The result is a team that relies entirely on McDavid and Draisaitl;. Take away McDavid/Draisaitl from Edmonton and Pettersson/Hughes from Vancouver, then compare rosters and tell me who is the better team.
Edmonton is still the same defensively horrible team they were back in 2010, the only difference is now they have McDavid and Draisaitl sweeping those issues under the rug.
Calgary shouldve gone rebuild when Tkachuk wanted out. They couldve gotten a boat load of picks if they cleaned house.
Instead you trade and acquire aging players who only had a few prime years left. You can recover from these issues without a rebuild, Canucks look to be doing it, but like Canucks fans have learned, getting back to the top without a rebuild 99% of the time will take longer and be more difficult than just rebuilding.
Could you imagine Edmonton picking #1 overall this year?

Canucks may or may not have a good year but it doesn't lessen my enjoyment of the Flames and Oilers sucking. It's hilarious and the more the fans and media pick these teams as "contenders" the more enjoyable this gets.
Pretty much the problem that Calgary had decided to go to Toronto and left a mess. A mess in the shape of Huber-Doh and Kadri.
