    Yes,

Apparently your brain doesn’t measure up

  2. tackle64

Mike vernon, ron hextall, grant fuhr, curtis joseph, dominik hasek, tom barraso, patrick roy, mike richter, ed belfour… the goaltending was just fine back in the day.

  3. MiloGoesToTheFatFarm

    Ovechkin isn’t better than Gretzky

  4. tuxedo7777

I answer your ? With another. Do meaningless, stat padding modern day goals matter??

  5. Active-Possibility77

Remember those two lines you couldn’t pass over too

  6. Porkchopp33

Era is now goalies are bigger and more athletic than ever but IMO Hasek and Broudeur are two of the best ever

  7. Sr_Raisin_bran

Goalies back then had to better now its just big pads

  8. Sr_Raisin_bran

Make the pads smaller and get rid of the trapezoid rule being back the two line pass rule and touch icing make hockey great again

  9. TapInevitable

No, it was the technology and technique that’s does. I have used and have experienced pads and equipment form this era and they are heavy and get heavier throughout the game. The butterfly was used but goalies did not do slide’s when in the position and most goalies still used combo saves for low shots. The stand up era of goalies really relies on reflexes, desperation saves, poke checks, and strength/ conditioning. The game was also a lot slower and simpler making it more easier for the goalies as well.
Billy smith, Grant Fuhr, ken Dryden, they would not survive todays game. The wooden player sticks also made shots more predictable then today. That’s why players who were so good back then where plays who could be deceptive with there shots, like Mario and Gretz

    Oh yeah, it does.

I mean the facts do prove that scoring was less difficult in the 80’s than it is in this era.

Era adjusted stats are a thing, we cannot forget

  11. JerbearCuddles

Not touching this, the older folks will get in their feels.

  12. Own_Cartoonist266

Gretzkys stick literally grew on a tree

I think ovie’s stick is made from material you can only get from an asteroid or something

  13. Indigo-Snake

It’s not like every game in the 80’s were 8-6 and every game in the 2010’s we’re 1-0…

  14. Justus44

Can Ovi haters chill already? Post is about difference in hockey in different years, not “who’s better” holy war banner

  15. Chewie_i

I always love when people make the argument that Gretzky was only so good because the goaltending and such was bad at the time. If that’s the case, you’d think more people would have been as good as 99

  16. JacksonHoled

When people ask Who’s the best player ever you gotta consider vs his era. I mean Maurice Rocket Richard wouldnt be better than any curret NHLer currently. The guy was working a second job during summers.

  17. MtSilverR3d

I’m sorry I think Gretzky is the second best player of all time but if you watch his goals they’re not nearly as impressive. The fact is that players were smaller and slower back then and the goaltenders were smaller.

  18. whyamihereimnotsure

This isn’t a valid comparison when all of these photos are taken from different angles, different distances, goalies in various states of movement, etc.

Presenting an argument like this is basically just bait and misinformation.

  19. HeyEatYourVegetables

Gretz is a scrub but atleast he has good whiskey.

  20. Buffbigw76

$30 Wood stick vs $400 composite flex to add horsepower stick. If you’re trying to say, Gretzky wouldn’t be able to do that now, you’re kidding. I was better than a one trick pony standing on the left circle waiting for a one timer to get 80% of his goals.

    …But please….keep them coming lol.

  21. LostBeneathMySkin

No doubt goalies are bigger and better at stopping pucks nowadays but skater equipment is leaps and bounds better than it was back in 99’s day. Ovi would be going through 30 sticks per game lol. Also Ovi likes fresh blades and fresh gloves quite often during a game. Not getting that back in the day especially the blades.
