Active listening skills, which some people call reflective listening, are critical for professionals, leaders, students, parents, customer service, and counselors. In short, active listening is the foundation of effective listening.

As explained in the video, it involves 1) both verbal and nonverbal cues, 2) asking good questions, and 3) giving an informed response.

  1. I'm a student and if i dont understand a point while the teacher is teaching i just completely zone out mentally for the rest of the session.

  2. Like this a lot but the one where you’re paying for someone to listen is really incorrect. A psychologist does not just listen…

  3. Apply this to interviews on media that you watch. You will quickly realize why you like some interviewers and don't like others. 😉

  4. Hello Dr Lyon, do you do any personal 1:1 coaching on public speaking and presenting

  5. hey all i have started working in construction and i focus on what my boss says as best i can, eye contact and dropping everything I'm doing to listen, but once they've finished talking everything they've just said flies over my head no matter how hard i try to retain the info, pls help I'm worried I'm going to lose my job because of this huge flaw of mine

  6. Man. I need to work on all 4! I’m excited because these tips will help both personally and professionally. Thank you.

  7. Very challenging when dealing with someone with a BPD. The 900th time they repeat the same complaint at you it's hard not to look tired and dejected and act like you're interested in what they're saying as they insult you and yell at you.

  8. I'm terrible at listening. I tend to let my mind wander, or visualizing what the other person is talking about.
Then as I'm visualizing, they've continued on and I've missed the next part of what they've said…
I need to work on staying focused. Lol

  9. Hi I have a lazy eye that I can’t control so and people miss read this How could I deal with this with people . ? And I have tried to explain but people forget even when I look in the mirror I don’t know how I would take someone with this. Thank u 🙏🏼😊. Great video s and really like examples

  10. i have a hard time not interrupting people, i dont mean to be rude when i do it, i just wanna say what i have to say before i forget

  11. For years I thought it was me who was unclear in my speech. I was astonished to find out it was my listening skills that affected my speaking skills. After research on active listening and putting I the effort I have become a better conversationalist. There are times when a person will go on and on and so must break rules. I understand how other people had trouble talking with me.
In conclusion learning and practicing these techniques will change your life

  12. you can tell i’m bad at listening bc i’m scrolling through the comments rn instead 🤦‍♀️

  13. As someone who was born blind, giving and receiving nonverbal cues is a challenge. For example, I can’t tell if people are making iContact with me, nodding their heads, showing expressions of interest on their faces, and what have you. I’m working on doing those things when listening to others though.
Regarding jumping in, do you think it’s OK to jump in with a question about something that a person just said before they continue on with their story? Sometimes I have wanted to know a little more information or have a perspective explained further before they move on. What do you all think about this?

  14. I'm a good listener, but most people are not. They just want to talk about themselves and what's going on in their lives.

  15. One hack is don't get over excited when talking to someone and keep your energy low so whatever they say would automatically seem exciting to you and you listen actively. I have tried this and it works for me. Since if you are over excited it is more likely that you would talk more.

  16. Good to know that my 'mm's and 'mhm's and 'hm's aren't just annoying sounds to fill the space when I feel like I've been too quiet.

  17. Hi Alex! My daughter just shared your video with me and I look forward to seeing and listening to more of them. Thank you! I think NVC is the most difficult thing for me. I tend to be doing things while I'm 'listening' so eye contact suffers and the potential to be distracted increases…

  18. Thank you so much for this video, Is my first time on your channel, I learned a lot with your 4 tips, I need to work on all the tips.

  19. My key in active listening is say something that has nothing to do with anything they said.

  20. Eye contact is a seraious problem.I just can't stop laughing when I imagine something and implemented it on the speaker
