Jay Onrait was joined by TSN Hockey analysts Craig Button and Mike Johnson to discuss what they expect to see this season from the Maple Leafs, Senators and Canadiens.
Can someone remind Chris Johnston that Ottawa had AHL calibre goalies start 24 games for them last year and they still wound up 6 points out of a playoff spot?
Can the leafs contend for the Stanley Cup? Certainly not with this current roster. The talent is there but the effort and physicality needed to win is lacking.
Leafs had hot goaltending past 2 years and still couldn't do it – and D is way worse now. And G is highly suspect regardless of what Leaf acolytes think about Woll.
As a leafs fan, I’m to the point now where an increasingly larger part of me every year doesn’t want them to ruin the streak. Maybe they should see if they can be the first team to go 100 years without winning squat. You play for the leafs because you love hockey. There’s no real expectation of winning.
Of course they are a contender. If you're a top 8 seed in the NHL, your odds of winning a cup are very good. It doesn't matter what happened in the past, especially when the look of your team changes and issues coaches have pointed out last year have been addressed. There are plenty of teams that had a terrible precedent until they actually won, and there is no standard for how long it takes a team to win until they do as we have examples of varying periods of time until a team wins, including the 1st round.
If the Leafs win the cup, I wouldn't be surprised – they have some of the best odds to win. If they lost in the first round again, I also wouldn't be surprised since the Atlantic is always a stacked division at the top – any one of them is considered a contender for many years, especially after you see how the team that beat the Leafs went on to make the cup finals many, many times. They are not exactly losing to bad teams. Obviously losing in the 1st round in the Atlantic is not the same to losing in the 1st round in the Central. If the Leafs were in the Central the last 6-7 years, are you seriously telling me they have identical playoff success? Get off that.
If the Leafs do win a cup this year, you know they really deserve it because their road is among the hardest in the NHL.
Leafs will win the cup eventually its only a matter of time. Ive noticed more and more ppl wearing leafs hats out west. They'll come back and when they do it'll go from being cool to hate the leafs to being leaf natioooooon 💪
