God forbid, if Petey gets traded, what would Allvin want in return? Futures for a rebuild or NHL-ready players and just build around Quinn and Demko?

The current Canucks front office has been fairly tight lipped. I imagine this can be as simple as the guys Friedman talks to aren’t high enough in the chain to know for certain. It sounds kind of ridiculous otherwise to suggest the team wouldn’t commit if Petey commits.

I mean…sure they aren’t going to beg him to stay here if he really doesn’t want to.

But I firmly believe if Petey says yep let’s do it, it will be done, and fast. He’s their superstar player. No way the Canucks are going to say oh ok let’s think about it for a second.

It’s cute that the Canucks think that they’re the ones actually playing hardball on this. If Petey softened his stance a bit they’d drop 100mil in front of him in a second and probably break the fax machine trying to get it filed so quickly with the league.

Feels like they’re just trying to posture a bit in their own way to present that they’re actually in control of this when the world knows they aren’t really.

If the Canucks are the ones unsure about committing to Petey, they’ve lost the plot. That’s absolutely insane.

This is Friedman posturing and trying to do the Canucks a solid by intimating that Pettersson’s not the only one driving the bus.

Just offer him the Dahlin contract, and call it a day

  7. I mean I can understand management waiting, he had a good year and could regress. Currently could be a bad time to negotiate coming off the year he had.

  8. Suboobiz

If they miss the playoffs he’s gone. They better find some magic

Until 5 minutes ago Winnipeg seemed ready to trade both Scheifele and Hellebuyck this season and Hellebuyck wanted out because he wants a cup, now they’re both signed to 7 years contracts.

Hopefully this is just the ugly part of the negotiations coming out now and Petey ends up signing.

Well, yeah. It’s probably a longer term deal and you don’t wanna start out uncommitted lol

I’m out even worried about what happens with Pettersson in the future, he either signs a long term deal or he doesn’t, either way we will benefit. If we trade him we will get a kings ransom with several teams trying to out bid themselves to get s #1 center in his prime.

Petey cut off negotiations. That tells the team: ‘I’m not signing anytime soon – unless you offer me something absolutely insane.’

This tells Petey: ‘We aren’t going to offer you something insane.’

Which sets up our worst-case-scenario: Petey only signs a one year deal next year, setting him up to walk as a UFA (or get massively overpaid).

It’s negotiations. Pettersson got to have his moment in control, this about the team trying to take some leverage back.

Friedman does nothing but cheerlead for players to play hardball with and ultimately leave Vancouver. Look up the water carrying he did for Horvat’s agent last year. He is just a mouthpiece for player agencies.

  15. kaboomatomic

I been saying this. Both parties benefit from an increase in cap. End of discussion.

I’ve noticed Friedman always subtly angles the conversation to put pressure on the players in contract negotiations. He’s not as soft and happy go lucky as everyone thinks he is. His “honest” opinions are carefully crafted to favor big business and the owners. This is how Friedman gains access to the big scoops.

I’m sure lots of Friedman fans will disagree with me but he is very subtle and crafty. Just recently he brown nosed Aquilini when sharing insider information about “an owner” needing to meddle in the affairs of his team because he “just cares so much.” Ugh I really had to hold my nose on that one. Could he possibly get closer to the hole?

Also Friedman has voiced that he wants a luxury tax for the richest owners.

If you don’t believe me just keep your antenna up in the future or look at his past Twitter feed. He very often and very subtly puts the balance of pressure on the players in contract negotiations while pretending to be perfectly impartial, and he does it for access to the owners.

In one tweet or radio hit or whatever he can stir up controversy and emotion to promote his brand while brown nosing the owners in one fell swoop. He’s the top NHL journalist because he’s a master at this underhanded shit.

Meanwhile the most likely narrative is Pettersson just wants to wait until the cap rises so he can make max bank. It’s not hard to figure out. But now Friedman just sent the dogs after the player.

Interesting how Petey was the Canucks only “untouchable” player less than 10 months ago and now the Canucks aren’t so sure about committing long term to him. I call bullshit.

If the team isn’t sure about committing long term to Petey then why the hell did they sign Miller to that monstrous contract? Why did they trade a 1st and 2nd round pick for Hronek (who isn’t signed beyond this season). Why did they buy out OEL?

If this all goes sideways, the media better ask the team these questions.

  18. Podkolzins_a_Canuck

You chase Petey to the very end and give him the money he wants, period. He is one of the most talented players to ever put on a Canucks sweater. Its absolutely ridiculous to play the pride game and try and hardball Elias Pettersson. As if we have any shot whatsoever at replacing him.
