copp spent the entire season coming off of core surgery. his points were low as a reflection.
Correction: the Red Wings made the playoffs in Jeff Blashill's first year.
Aww, the Toronto fans are throwing stones! lol
I don't think they are going to the playoffs but LAST? Nah GTFO
Blake is smoking something
You guys are operating on the assumption that Detroit has been in rebuild mode since their last playoff series. That is incorrect. This rebuild started with the Seider pick. And when you get zero lottery luck it takes way longer. You guys even acknowledge it was the Matthews era where things changed. Well, he was a lottery pick. Take him away and Toronto is still wallowing in regular season mediocrity.
I'm glad Jesse said it, I could be wrong, but I don't see how their over/under is 86.5! I think they are going to be bad, worse than the Habs
I dunno, the free agency buys don't bother me. The team's still 5 mil or so under the cap. The cap is going up and few of the FA's like Perron are leaving next year. All of the free agency signings were for under $6 mil and short term deals with the biggest signings being Copp and Compher who at least give you some positional flexibility. As for the young guys, there are a lot of good ones, but most of them only have experience in juniors or limited roles on European teams. No veteran FA is really stealing a spot from any of them yet (tho Danielson looked awesome in preseason). Plus, for all the talk of them gambling for the playoffs, no one in Detroit is saying the are pushing to make the playoffs yet. I don't get all the Yzerman doubt.
1. Copp played through core surgery.
2. Believe it or not but the defence is better. Gustav lidstrom and Jordan Osterlie were ass. Ghost replaces Hronek who is good offensively and crap defensively.
3. Vrana and bert hardly played last year rather due to injury or substance abuse so we replaced them and then some.
4. Detroit is built like the Seattle kraken with not much star power but decent throughout the line up. The kraken don’t scream awesome on paper and they are still a good team.
5.Husso is a solid goalie. He played through injury and I don’t know if you ever watched a wings game before but neither ned or hellberg could be relied upon to ever give Husso a break. He was known as our mvp at one point.
6. They can battle injury way better than last year. With 7 nhl defence and top prospects like Simon edvinsson, they can handle injury just fine. On forward is the same thing with Berggren, kasper, luff, etc.
7. In terms of goals here’s a bunch of guys who can put up 20 or more if 100% HEALTHY – Dylan Larkin, Lucas Raymond, Alex debrincat, Michael Rasmussen, Robby Fabbri, Daniel Sprong, Andrew Copp who will have no core surgery holding him back, David Perron
8. Ghost, petry, and seider and maybe even walman can contribute offensively (defensively we are far from perfect)
9. Having three solid goalies is what Vegas did when they won the cup. Correct me if I’m wrong but Adin hill was their 3rd choice to put in the playoffs after Logan Thompson and brosoit.
10. With all these veterans they can flip some at the deadline for assets and keep who they like so they can bring in their high end prospects to an alright team instead of a team that’s absolute garbage and expect them to carry the team on their backs.
11. Guys like veleno and Rasmussen have had a great camp and preseason. Rasmussen already took a step forward last year before getting hurt and hopes to build on that year. Veleno has had a few nice snipes this preseason and I’m not saying he’s going to explode but 15 goals isn’t unreasonable to me if he can move his way up the line up
12. Teams around them are already struggling with certain players. Florida doesn’t have their top d pair for a decent chunk of the year. Ottawa is dealing with Shane pinto who might not stay and Josh Norris who can’t seem to get past his injury. Tampa bay is in desperate need for a number 1 goalie who is at least surviceable so can’t even temper their back up goalie.
13. In conclusion I feel like you guys are giving a little too much hate on the wings. Not saying they will make the playoffs but are way better than the Habs and will be a competitive team.
FIRST IN THE ATLANTIC, MO NORRIS, CAT HART, HUSS VEZINA, LEDD ER RIIIIIDE
There's more to the game than scoring goals. Toronto scores all kinds of goals and by every measure they've been a complete failure beyond the regular season.
Built through free agency, count the draft picks the past 3 drafts. They’ve done nothing but collect picks.
Copp had core surgery and barely made opening night. He wasn’t right for a long time into the season.
Geez boys that’s easily a -4 segment with the mistakes. Google still free in Canada fellas?
Berggren is pronounced bear-gren
They slipped like -9 total spots in the lottery. Yzermans first few was purging off the Holland mistakes. Shame on the Redwings for not winning the lottery?!
lmao BEHIND MONTREAL… SPEWING IN TECHNICOLOR
So having 3 capable goalies is a red flag 😂😂. They spent $2.4 mill combined on Reimer and Lyon to secure depth is apparently horrible. Lost for words. When you have the cap why not? Imagine spending $1.3 on Ryan Reaves lol. A guy who is just a wanna be boxer with skates
This segment should be named, sorry it’s not the leafs so we mailed it in.
Why does this feel more like deep seated hating? 😂 🖕
Adam, more research is needed. This rebuild started in 19. He had to clear out alot of bad contracts. The rookies are coming but this year is about making the team better. In the next 2 years 5 or 6 Rookie will be with this team if not more. Hall will not make it to the 3rd year of his deal.
Way too reactionary and negative takes on this one. Rebuilds take a long time, especially with the Red Wings and what Holland left Yzerman. The goal, which Yzerman has made clear, is to get young guys developed in different leagues and not throwing them to the wolves. It takes years to do this. It all first started with the Seider pick at 2019. The Zadina, Berggren, and Veleno picks were all from the previous GM, who left the franchise with absolutely nothing else but actual bad draft picks, which we can argue Zadina is one of those as well. Yzerman bought out really bad contracts, and has signed other contracts that are genuinely reasonable. Copp isn't a bad deal and is full on exaggeration, given context of his surgery (this season is the year to actually criticize the deal or not). Chiarot is the only questionable one I have myself. But the larger point here is, Yzerman isn't signing these deals to "make the playoffs" as some fringe team. He signs them to create competition for the younger players he's drafting. For one, the Red Wings need players on the team, so yeah spend the money, and if you can sign them for 3-4 year contracts as of this previous off-season, that's perfect for developing younger players. The idea is to create a constant Stanley Cup contender for years to come. With that being said, I see them competing with the 6th place spot in the Atlantic, against the Senators. No shot they are lower than Montreal lmao.
Andrew Copp wasn't TECHNICALLY hurt all season but he was recovering from core surgery he had over the summer. Stamkos had core surgery in March 2020 and didn't return until Jan 2021, Copp had his surgery in August 2022 and was back for opening night of the 2022-2023 season (missed the entire preseason recovering) and his point production noticeably ramped up later in the season. He will likely be better than 8 goals this year.
*edit for spelling
So Jesse put Detroit at 83.5 and then Montreal at 73.5 but the Habs is finishing above Detroit? Make this make sense to me Jesse… At least keep it consistent…
This team is unequivocally better than last year
These guys have a clear lack of understanding with this team
These guys are complete idiots.. absolutely clueless.
I understand there's a lot of teams to analyze but the lack of nuance here is frustrating
If its the best building in the sport… then when not have an All Star Game there?
I think Detroit is making the playoffs this year. People are sleeping on this team, and I can’t wait to watch them play.
This just seemed like they rushed some of these without doing some real research. Saying this team can’t compete for a playoff spot is insane when a worse wings team last season were in a playoff spot in February. Very disappointing for a podcast that prides themselves as fact base.. when talking drafting they elected not to mention no team has moved down more in the draft lottery the past 5 years than Detroit. Also they mention the lack of draft success but the wings have one of the top prospect pools in the league. They mention signing 2 goalies that make over a million each which is not true Lyon makes 900k for 2 years. They mention copp goal scoring when dude had core surgery in the summer last year and it took him a while to recover from it. They mention the money spent in FA but not mentioning they still have just over five million in space which is 5th most in the nhl. Just all around a crap preview and they should be called out for it.
How many MiraLAX did you guys consume before coming up with these takes?
Y’all are gonna look stupid after this season. The Wings have gotten so deep after this off-season. You’re unable to see the whole picture because of the sheer number of moves.
I think part of it is that Yzerman recognises how hard the division is at the moment, and is trying to slow things down slightly. But considering what's in the pipeline in Buffalo and Montreal that's a risky strategy. 😀
I'm not saying Detroit is going to make the playoffs, but I can guarantee I'll never watch these jagoffs talk about hockey ever again. There are straight up much better channels for your time. I won't list any out of respect, but if you get your hockey info here, you are getting short changed.
8th? I never had a least-favorite SDP member before. Thanks, Jesse, for the new experience!
Comments desperately trying to carry water for the roster construction when the ceiling has clearly been seen on the team, as built. Yzerman himself has demonstrated he doesn’t believe in the plan, with the deadline fire sale after trying to push for a playoff spot the week before.
Team’s bad and will be for at least four more seasons.
