Honestly don’t mind the inclusion of Garland on the top line, may as well try the experiment

Cole-Myers sounds like a recipe for disaster

Ngl I thought the team was going to take a longer look at one of Soucy/Cole playing the right side with Hughes. Still feels like the shape of the roster isn’t finalized, with this being the last pre-season game.

  3. SpectreFire

Boy that’s an ugly fucking right side. You’ve got Hronek followed by straight garbage.

I’d prefer to see Hog have some reps on that third line with Suter and Beau. Seems like a good combination. Then have Aman Studnicka and Joshua battle out for the 4th line winger role.

Definitely feels like this is more Tocchet trying out some different combinations to see how things click before things actually matter. I don’t think this will be what we see opening night

    Thats… Not very good.

Garland on line 1 and PDG on line 2 is pretty embarrassing for an aspiring playoff team.

    And that D core… Oof.

  6. AS_Empire

This is a line-up designed for Tocchett Hockey.

ITT: People acting like a little line experimentation to finish off the preseason is offensive.

Wonder if these are getting closer to the real thing?

Interesting to see Hronek paired with Hughes!

  9. mephnick

Hoglander honestly has looked very meh on the top line from the first day of training camp.

I think the club was gambling on him and Podz taking big steps forward to fill some spots and it just didn’t happen. Hopefully Hoglander can progress as the year goes on.

Hronek and Hughes… yikes. I get using it in penalty kill or critical moments, but we need to spread out our backend offence more.

Glad to see PDG moving up in the lines. I think he’s gonna do well this season. I’m surprised we didn’t put Suter and Garland together considering they seem to play quite well together

  11. Hughes and hronek. Let’s seeee what these boys can do

  12. redditguyinthehouse

That’s a playoff team right there

  13. dwaynebigd

We could have really used our lad Schenn back this year

  14. Spookedchicken

Interesting, I like the experimentation. I’ll take it one step further…

I think they need to give the Hughes-Myers pair another try. It gives Myers a clear, defined role; get the puck to Hughes 90% of the time and since he is playing with Hughes he should be in the offensive zone more often than not which is an all around win. Then most importantly to me it gets Juulsen and(or) McWard off the 1st pairing this year. I don’t like what I’ve seen from either of them this preseason in a Hughes partner context.

  15. CharlesHudon

Juulsen should be with Hughes, to let Quinn do whatever

I really prefer Garland on the third line. He’s like the third line center on the team which we kind of need him to be since he’s being paid third line center money.

The reason I say that he’s like the third line center is he can fill the role of driving play which is usually the center’s role.

If I had any confidence that there was a chance they’d actually play Garland in that spot, rather than having him as a placeholder for Mikheyev, I’d be pretty happy with this.

  18. jdmay101

I am truly baffled that they paid two UFA defensemen who could, in theory, play the right side, only to get to camp and decide that in actuality neither of them are able to play the right side.

  19. Strict-Caterpillar38

I actually like these lines, or at least feel these experiments are worthwhile.

Beau and Hogs have been pretty invisible on the 1st line while Garland has looked good on the 3rd line. Garland is more skilled than Beau and smarter than Hogs. He’s also one of our best 5-on-5 wingers so maybe he makes the line more dangerous and creates space for Petey and Kuzy.

Joshua adds some size and grit to that 3rd line.

Myers needs to play with a stay-at-home guy because he’s proven incapable of playing that role himself. He’s better at being the puck mover in a duo.

Hronek is the only right shot defender who can play as many minutes as Hughes. In a perfect world we’d be able to split them. But at least with this arrangement Hughes has a consistent partner, and they can basically play half the game together and dominate. The other pairs just need to hold down the fort. I think it’s worth a try.
