[Dhaliwal] Sources say the Canucks like D Cal Foote who is on waivers but the feeling is, it is not the right situation to have a player on a team where his dad is a coach.

This is a professional hockey team, not grade school. You have 1 competent RHD with NHL experience on the roster, claim the kid. John Weisbrod was in the room when our new captain was birthed and we still drafted him.

We are all Canucks. Unless your dad coaches here.

If you think Cal Foote can help the team, you put in a claim.

That said Cal Foote is a bad skater and his defensive IQ is questionable. There have been better RHD that have dropped onto the waiver and the Canucks didn’t put in a claim so I don’t get what Foote has over the other RHD we’ve seen on the waiver over the last week like JBD. If it’s about Foote’s NHL experience that also means you’ve seen more of him at the NHL level and it hasn’t been good.

Im honestly pretty torn on this.

Like, Cal is already on waivers… trying to make it to the NHL. So if he can’t hold down a roster spot on the Canucks, it’s not like he wasn’t already destined for the minors.

But naturally, guys (Juulsen/McWard) are going to be a bit pissed if the coaches kid is playing over them.

I’ve been wanting the Canucks to go after Foote for awhile… I understand if they pass.. but I also think this is as promising of a waiver claim as you’re gonna get.

Eh, I’m not gonna lose any sleep on this. We claim him, that means we need to offer up some of our pieces on waivers and I don’t know if I like that alternative, especially for someone that’s already a tweener.

If his name was Cal Smith no one would care or think twice about it with the way his pro career has gone.

  7. Only-Nature7410

That won’t go over well in this market. Not for a second. Especially for a bubble player trying to maintain a roster spot.
Maybe if he was a regular

  8. PaperweightCoaster

Meh, he’s not a good player. Dad’s on the team so they’re gonna pump his tires a bit and cite a potential conflict of interest as a reason. If he was actually good, they would’ve 100% claimed him. Move along.

I don’t have a problem with it. If he fits, he fits. If it makes this team better it’s the right move no matter who he’s related to.

Worked for the Lowrys in Winnipeg until Dave became the Head Coach.

I hate all these unwritten rules (don’t trade within the division, no coach’s kids, don’t offer sheet anyone else’s player, don’t draft players from certain countries, etc…). If you think you can make the team better, you should do it. All that extraneous stuff shouldn’t enter into it.

family ties (campbells) won the bruins a cup.. Why not us.

  13. ProphetofElias

People are saying just do it and it’s not a big deal but the second Cal has a bad sequence and doesn’t get benched, y’all will scream nepotism from the high heavens. Smart to pass on this

  14. Captain_JT_Miller

I guess they won’t be getting any silent car rides home together after a bad game.

  15. Cronyism and nepotism is the hockey way, interesting line to draw but I get it

  16. Prettyspirals

Ask Colin Campbell if it’s ok. Unless they make it to the finals it should be ok right…Right?!

  17. I wouldn’t want him if his name was Cal Gary that’s for sure.
