Ideas on the Verge – Live Interview with Dmitry Orlov, Author of The Five Stages of Collapse

I’ve been reading a book called The 5 Stages of Collapse, by Dmitry Orlov. Over the last decade I have read several books in this niche and this is one of the most dense but entertaining reads on the subject. While the topic is tough to think about for most people, it is a subject that is worth investing a little bit of time into, in my opinion, because no civilization has ever lasted forever. While I do not believe that collapse can be predicted or forecast, reading a book like this can help you to understand the fragility that is baked into our western world and then translate that into a probabilistic map that will allow you to properly insure yourself. By insure, I don’t mean through a large insurance company, I mean approaches like I have detailed out in the Land As Insurance series.

There is a problem with engaging this topic. It can lead to paralysis, obsessivness and inaction because it is scary. If you are prone to this then you may want to broach this subject carefully. As an engineer we are constantly assessing the risk of systems and then creating designed responses to those risks. This is just one more risk to think about and permaculture gives us an approach to manage this risk so that we can move on with our lives in a positive way.

  1. I have an autographed copy of Dmitry's "The Five Stages of Collapse…" It's an outstanding read. When the book arrived in the mail, I was unable to put it down (unless practically forced). It is THAT informative and interesting.

What Dmitry discusses in the book is super-useful—he offers ideas on what one might expect to observe and experience as the U.S. continues its accelerating downward spiral…

Believe it or not, I didn't find the book depressing at all! Reading it actually gave me a boost—reducing some of the uncertainty I had about preparing my family—and building resilience. The book is definitely a gift…

Anyway, love Dmitry Orlov's work! Thank you for having him on your show!! Always a treat to hear his thoughts…. Orlov is brain candy (for the "End Times!")

  2. The initiative is laudable but please moderate so it's a bit richer. Not that many takeaways in this hour and twenty minutes.

  3. all good great ideas great book but the beard is like from our local travelling circus at the county fair

  4. Orlov is brilliant. Would love to hear him do more interviews. read 5 Stages years ago and loved it.

  5. If I had to describe the Soviet and post-Soviet conditions in one word, it would be "unfinished". That is, no landscaping, streets and alleys and parking would be not paved or in decent condition, blocks of flats would be, well, ratty-looking, in need of tuckpointing, and so on. But the trams and trolleybuses ran, were clean and reliable, the metro was excellent. Once you got in your flat, it was a different world. You had what you needed, your small fridge was full and like a "gastronom" (sort of a delicatessen).

  6. Looking good, Dmitry! Thank you for this work. May your boat be always as seaworthy and well-stocked as your unique mind. 🎩♥️🌏

  7. Dmitry doesn't give a damn what you think about him or his beard. Maybe you all were looking for the Kardashians.

  8. You waffled on for FOURTEEN fucking minutes before you introduced your guest! How RUDE of you!

  9. And here we are in 2021, with the food, housing, energy, financial systems in disarray unto collapse. Add in unlawful mandates, rampant civil unrest, etc etc.

    Prescient.

  10. The women's intro was revolting with all the bs about "carbon neutral" oligarch nonsense. I'm sure Dmitry had to hold his laughter.

  11. If it wasn't for the foreign and faking 5th column named the DNC, then the USA still would be a garden of roses.

  12. Dmitry Orlov: Author, Futurist, Linguist, Propagandist, Chief Troll at Internet Research Agency, St. Petersburg, Russia. Ridiculous beard makes him look even more troll-like.

  13. Para conocerlo deseo la traduccion al Castellano, recomendado por Wilmer de Inty Noticias se los agradesco.

  14. Love the end quote. When the water is let out of the pool we will find out who was swimming naked…

  15. For someone who can see the big picture on energy, I'm surprised he can't see how the world is overpopulated with humans.

  16. This guy thinks differently! But he is very biased due to his Russian origins.
Honestly, Russia (in 2023) is more likely to collapse again before the world collapses.

Also he worries about negative black swans but discounts positive black swans which can solve big problems the world is facing.
