Has Treliving done enough for Leafs to make a deeper run?

The Maple Leafs finally got over the first round hump last playoffs, but were sent packing in five games by the Panthers in the second round. Has new GM Brad Treliving done enough for the Leafs to make a deeper run this time around? Craig Button and Mike Johnson discuss in the latest One Big Question.

  1. He’s not done. There’s still trade deadline. No reason to question the entire season yet. Pump the brakes.

  2. So you bring in a GM who won 2 playoff rounds in 9 years. You run it back again with the same core. Yet the analysis is that the team is built for a deep run in the playoffs?
The defence is bad – definitely in the bottom tier in the NHL. The only real hope is that one of the goaltenders actually is an amazing goaltender.
This team will win the conference and the division as they are an excellent regular season team. The same weaknesses of the last 5 years still remain for the playoffs.

  3. Ask after the deadline – Tree doesn’t think this D core is cup worthy I don’t care what he says in the media

  4. Brought in Bertuzzi, Domi and Reaves to replace kerfoot and Bunting. A+

    Replaced Holl with Kleingburgh A+

Signed Matthews to clear up the drama A+

Timmons to me is already better than Liljegren so moving Liljegren, Jarnkrok and Nylander for Zadorov and Lindholm type deal to bolster the defence and semi replace Nylander would top it off.

  5. No of course not. He is too limited by the salary structure he inherited. A GM at this point can't fix the team. The Leafs succeed if this group gets lucky and goes on a run. One more Calle Jarnkrok more or less doesn't matter. Domi and Reaves and Bertuzzi are what they could find. Are these three better than the various collections of other forwards they have had around the core five before? Maybe but probably not and the team isn't as deep as it used to be. Each new group comes with their own risks. T^hey need to get up to speed. We will see how quickly this group adapts.

  6. I am not a leafs fan, but their forward group is scary and built for the playoffs a little better, but this is assuming Knies will be an immediate contributor. However, the D core looks super weak, at least on paper. I cant think of a potential playoff team with a worse D core.

  7. Dubas and Shanahn destroyed the leafs. There’s nothing in the cupboard unless it’s Robertson again. Don’t fool yourself Minten and Cowan will be Marliles

  8. To hell with treliving, matthews, marner, and tavares specifically need to do more for the leafs to go further… which im a habs fan so fuck the leafs lol

  9. As a Flyers fan while patiently waiting during our rebuild would love, however, to see the CORE-4 vs. McJESUS & CO in an all Canadian Stanley Cup Finals 🙂

  10. keep in mind the team will add depth come deadline. but he's done a terrific job cleaning up dubas the doofus mess

  11. same as every year, the goaltending and defence aren't there. Samsonov is not the clutch goaltender to carry them through the playoffs and they are still lacking a shutdown defenceman or two.
