So earlier I posted a pic of the Habs-Leafs-Bruins asking if they had the best three-way-hate or “trivalry” in hockey. Some good discussion followed, and here are the most mention honorable mentions. Thoughts?

NOTE: Tap on the image to view the whole thing. It cut off half of it.

  2. Maybe it’s because my formative years of fandom were the mid-90s, but I feel Devils-Rangers-Flyers is a much more hate filled triangle. I’ve never had much hate for the Isles.

  3. Isphet71

Wings leaving the western conference made that throuple break up.

  4. Contrarian_Eh

Ottawa has no rivalry with Montreal. Pittsburgh yes

  5. CurtP31477

As a Blues fan, it was easy to really, really hate the Red Wings in the 90s. Now a sizable part of the roster is former Blues. I’m almost rooting for them. I can still dislike the Hawks though. I would say Minnesota is a bigger rival, maybe Nashville. Even the Coyotes are a rival because no matter how bad they are the Blues can’t beat them. Lol

Caps rivalry with the flyers kind of burned out aeons ago, I don’t hate them at all. If you wanted to keep the caps in the picture then NYR would make better sense to me.

  7. MaximumOverfart

Canucks fan, there is no real Oilers-Canucks rivalry. They both have rivalries with Calgary though, so it really just Oilers and Canuck fans hating Flames fans.

  8. Clarctos67

Not sure about ours really; it’s a two way thing with the Flyers and we’ve had a recent rivalry with Washington but it’s nowhere near the same level.

  9. SomeJerkOddball

Seems about right. I wonder if you could say that there’s a Calgary-Winnipeg-Minnesota one. At least from Calgary’s perspective those games can be pretty heated.

  10. Funky_Cows

Based on just the amount of history it’s gotta be habs leafs bruins

  11. hockeynoticehockey

It’s really a quadvalry because the Flyers need to be added to that. All 4 of those teams hate each other.

And for sure Edmonton and Calgary but I’m not sure how deep the hatred runs for Vancouver.

And Chicago, St Louis and Detroit? Maybe historically, but they’re not in the same division any more.

EDIT Because I didn’t read all of it. The California teams should have a trivalry but do they? Can they? With their weather how can they hate anybody?

Philly belongs in the NY triad, but like I said everybody hates Philly, but Pittsburgh and Washington? Not feeling that one.

Flyers/Pens/Caps was huge a few years ago

  13. Then_Original_1269

I thought if everything here but the caps and blues one

  14. CaptainObviousCanuck

Canucks vs Management vs salary cap

  15. I hate these forced rivalries due to location.

Out of these, I’d say Hawks, Wings, Blues is the best. But we all know the real second best three way rivalry is the New York’s and Jersey. They are always very good matches with some nice big city clashing.

  16. FishBobinski

Vancouver just wants to tag along to the best rivalry in hockey.

  17. Cleaner80

There will never be a trivalry like
Toronto vs Toronto Fans vs Toronto Media

  18. thorninmysoul

Definitely with the wings in the west they were rivals with the Hawks, the blues were there I guess just not as big of a threat imo. Now I think we are building a rivalry with the sens and Buffalo as the up and comers of the Atlantic. I’m looking forward to that coming to a head over the next few years

  19. Friggin_Grease

    What about Chicago/Minnesota/Vancouver?

Or do two of them just hate Chicago?

  20. Havoc_XXI

San Jose considers themselves rivals to someone…?

  21. XxMonsterZeroXx

Fuck the Sharks(especially their fans) and Fuck the Ducks just cause lol… that particular rivalry has taken a bit of a dive in recent years. Best moments as a Kings fan has to be beating both enroute to a cup win!

  22. Lillehammered

Question because I was too young to truly know, but would the Avs, Wings, Stars from the late 90’s be a solid choice?

  23. LenaiaLocke

    Flames/Oilers/Canuck’s 100%

Calgary/Edmonton is the best rivalry in all of the NHL. Games are always intense, plus being so close to one another makes it even better because people travel from their town to go watch the away games.

Vancouver wasn’t really part of the rivalry until the Oilers went on their 15 year slump (all the high draft picks, and 0 results) and Vancouver/Calgary started being the better rivalry.

Now that the Canucks aren’t an NHL team, Flames/Oilers is back on in full force. The fans are always at each other, and until the next matchup, you always have the upper hand on the other team’s fans if your team won last.

I’m sorry habs-leafs-bruins only one of these teams actually does anything in a normal setting playoffs

If we are going off recency the only real answer is pens caps flyers where there has been 4 cups since 2009 and amazing playoff series

I’m into 26 so I’m not old enough to remember 80s and 90s but I can tell you as a 26 year old the Avs red wings rivalry mean dick all now they are different conferences

  26. GrizzlyIsland22

As an Oilers fan, I can say that we don’t think about Vancouver at all. If anything right now, it’s Edmonton-LA-Vegas for the hate triangle. For straight-up 1-1 hatred, Edmonton vs Calgary has to be up there not just in hockey but in all sports.

  27. cakeschmammert

As a Blues fan, the rivalry with red wings has passed at this point. Avs fit better there now but even still doesn’t feel like a trilogy. I feel like Caps don’t belong in the Pens/Flyers rivalry either.
