I mean Fast is also on the 4th line when we assume the Staal line will probably be unchanged. I think this is very much in the air. It’s what training camp is for

Feels like we’ll swap out some of the old legs with Chatty from time to time, and I’m sure they’ve told him he has a future here, he just has to wait for Burns to retire, really.
We’re pushing for this year to be the year. Chatty would get a ring and become at least a third pair guy next year almost guaranteed. I don’t think he’s too upset about this.

Ruff is right by suggesting that this means absolutely nothing.
What’s worse about this lineup is the shiny new $7.5m AAV defenseman being on the 3rd pairing.

DeAngelo has to play the best defensive hockey of his life if he wants to stay on that 3rd pair. The Canes forwards are more stacked then they have ever been. Same with the defense. This isn’t the same team that has to absorb DeAngelo’s poor defensive play because they had no other options.
Chatfield is reliable defensively, mobile in transitions and works hard. How long will DeAngelo’s leash be when an ideal 3rd pair D is sitting in the press box? I would guess it is very short. Particularly in the Playoffs where DeAngelo always crumbles.
