DeSmith could actually be an okay backup if Silovs isn’t ready off the rip. No retained salary and not losing a second rounder means a W in my opinion.

Don’t hate it. We get a proper backup and partly clear our winger logjam. Get rid of a load of risk around Pearsons form after he missed so much time due to injury. Never a fan of giving up a third, but that’s the current market
I’m too lazy to do the math, but DeSmith’s cap hit was about $1.8m so it looks like the Canucks barely shedded enough cap to be cap compliant. I want to know by how much, though.
Having a legit backup probably helps the teams stability and makes sure Demmer can actually have a night off

This is a huge W you get rid of a guy in Pearson who we moved past lets be honest and you get yourselves a good backup goalie on the cheap to give demko some games off and you save money at the cost of a 2025 3rd well done

I’m a fan. The fancy stats people (and me) love Casey DeSmith. Seems like a great 1B option to take a load off of Demko. Not sure what we’re going to do with Martin, Tolopilo, Silovs, and Sawchenko.

Gets us a solid backup, sheds cap, and let’s Pearson play where he can have a fresh start. The third pick is also in 2025 (and we better be good-ish by then). Well done!

This is actually really solid work for Van.
Shored up a position of organizational weakness (legit veteran backup goalie). They traded from a position of strength (winger).
And they cleared up enough cap-space they should be able to be involved in the waiver wire.
So Montreal could flip Pearson at the deadline for another 3rd round pick
I hope Pearson had some input on this, I feel like the organization owes him that much after completely mishandling his injury.

This is the reverse of what we were all fearing lol. DeSmith gets a new home which is good for him though I wonder if that means they have zero confidence in Martin. Alternatively DeSmith now gets packaged as a “sweetener” to rid them of Garland or Myers.
