Seems legit, I too want to keep expectations low.

  2. s1n0d3utscht3k

    fair take until the end

the ceiling of this team still not even reaching Wild Card is laughable

this about a team that is better then the Round 2 Game 7 team we had a few years ago

our likely result may 8th-10th but the absolute ceiling of the team is undoubtedly at least 7th. the guy says Demko has a Vezina year and Petey breaks 110 points (our ceiling) and we still miss? crazy 😂

  3. Simple_Employment_49

I would have us closer to the 15-20 range I think this thinks we suck more than we do

  4. ziggazang

Until they prove it otherwise I’m agreeing

  5. Grazzygreen

It’s a bit cynical. Team was probably a playoff team last year last year had they got average goaltending. Think they’re due for some regression in the goal scoring scoring department but above average goaltending and average PK would still more than offset that.

7th -9th seed is my bet.

  6. Forecast — mainly mediocre with flashes of brilliance.

    Hence the Petey Problem.

He’s a star performer surrounded by a cast of nobodies and the occasional really good player.

With all the longterm damage done by blundering Benning, the sad irony is that Petey could do more for this team by being traded than by having a superstar performance this year.

  7. Aculandy

That second line is pretty rough compared to good teams.

I can easily see us finishing 25th because of the lack of depth. Imagine one long term injury to Petey, Hughes or Demko. That depth chart immediately looks like a bottom dweller.

  8. Hestonnnn

I’m not trying to hype them up too much, but wasn’t Demko out for a large chunk of last season? If he is healthy, that alone will likely get us a few more wins than last year with multiple AHL goalies

  9. berghie91

On paper our third and fourth line has like a couple NHLers sprinkled in to mostly an AHL squad

  10. DishwasherFromSurrey

That is a known Canucks hate account

  11. CurlingTrousers

The fatal mistake you can make here is only thinking about what YOUR team is capable of, and disregard the rest of the conference.

To make the playoffs, someone who made it last year has to fall out of playoff position. Vegas, Edmonton, Dallas, Colorado and probably locks again this year, realistically. So – who of LA, Winnipeg, Seattle and Minnesota is Vancouver going to do better than? And without St Louis, Calgary or Nashville getting any better?

There might – might – be an opening if Winnipeg or LA falter. But that’s all based on a presumption of 80-90 points from Miller, Petey, Hughes AND a bounce back for Demko AND a historically bad defense improved by Soucy and Hronek.

25th is about where most prognosticators are putting us. Just saying they’re all wrong because, trust me bro, is a very Canucks fan thing to do.

Don’t worry about it. Go in with no expectations, enjoy the season, and if in fact all of the league thinkers are wrong
well, it will be more satisfying. But
don’t hold your breath. Reality is often disappointing. Especially for a Canucks fan.

  12. HunterAntoski

This is completely fair until the team starts to show more than mediocrity. I would love for them to play to their potential and maybe even a bit better. Hopefully it’s a good season.

  13. Navy_Canuck

I see the cdc doomers have migrated over. Improved defense, healthy demko, a coach with a clear plan and expectation, better C depth..

Canucks are making the playoffs. Book it.

  14. Stollen_booty_

For me they’re a little low. Ceiling is probably closer to a wild card, but also depending on how the Cali teams & Calgary perform. The division isn’t that strong right now

  15. AppealToReason16

Ah the annual tradition. Rankings saying this team stinks, everyone says “no we’re great! Don’t they know we improved our depth?!” before the team goes and plays stinky again.

  16. DisplacedNovaScotian

I’m not sure how they can argue Demko could have a Vezina calibre season, but our ceiling is just outside the playoffs. Demko pulling that off without anything else changing from last year is likely enough on its own to squeek us into the playoffs. Add to that the defensive upgrades, and our ceiling is more probably the first wild card.

  17. ClosPins

Thoughts on it? Well… With Aquilini at the helm, you could cut-and-paste this every single season and be extremely accurate in your predictions.

  18. NoticedGenie66

On one hand my gut tells me we will more likely finish around 20th, but that difference could literally be a few points only. I’m inclined to say it’s fair, if a little bit low.

  19. Knight_On_Fire

I think we’ll find out right away if the team sucks or not. There’s always surprises so you never know if the team finally gels, but due to the flat cap they weren’t able to make the culture changes they wanted (rem when Rutherford said it was a country club).

I want them to win the first 2 games against Edmonton for their new captain. That would really set the tone. But if they start back on their heels vs Edmonton, especially if they cough up a multigoal lead… Like I say I think we’ll know right away if the team sucks or not.

  20. CanuckVegHead

It is hard to imagine the Canucks will be worse then last year.

They improved their D with Hronek, Cole and Saucey.

Demko was injured for a large chunk of last year and looked solid once he was back healthy.

The coaching system was abysmal to start last year.

The bottom six centers are better with Suter and Bleuger over Dries and Aman.

The PK was the worst in the nhl and management brought in 5 players that should improve the PK this year.

I am not saying we should plan the parade but anyone thinking we are projected to be worse than last year has been spending too much time puffing on the end of a tail pipe.

It will be a dogfight but the Canucks are in the hunt for a wild card spot.

  21. Talax604

The fact that the biggest addition according to this is Soucy shows that this is out to lunch. It’s obviously Hronek

  22. The ranking isn’t really wrong. We ARE stuck in the middle. This is a little more pessimistic than other rankings, but our ceiling this season is as a bubble playoff team, while our floor is probably around right around this ranking.

A good start is necessary for this team. Last year, October absolutely ruined us.

  23. ProphetofElias

“Biggest Addition” is a misleading thing for us cause I’d consider Hronek in that category based on the number of games he has played for us so far.

  24. HarveySpecter1970

I personally think they’ll be better than 25, when you have superstars on your team anything can happen.

Also, wtf do they have PDG on third line, guy doesn’t even know who should make it. No wonder he thinks we’re fucked.

Our healthy forward roster should consist of petey kuzmenko beavillier Miller boeser mikheyev hoglander suter garland podkzolin blueger Joshua.

You can’t tell me with upgrades at 3C (Dries–> Suter), healthy demko, and the PK that we won’t be better this season. Even if it’s marginal, I expect to be better.

  25. _BIG_FAT_REDDIT_MOD_

Seems close enough, maybe a couple spots too low but 20-23 seems right.

Until this group proves to people they’re competitive and can not just win games but consistently play quality fundamental hockey they’ll always be doubted and second guessed like this.

Glad to see the majority of people in here agree too. Got your typical homers but refreshing to know most people are on the same page unlike previous Benning years.

  26. slickjayyy

We had the 6th best offense in our conference beating out the eventual Stanley Cup champs in regular season goals for. We have a potential Vezina quality goalie and a defense that has improved to at least league average. As long as we stay healthy and play reasonably well out of the gate and throughout the season and our PK isnt a boat anchor, we are easily wildcard team ceiling if not higher.

People like to be pessimistic here and for good reason, but we actually have some very good pieces and if we improve defensively and on the PK and Demko plays like he did at the end of last season, I think we will surprise a lot of people
